iPhone Battery Drain from Apple Music

NB: Always back up before following these steps.

I advise deleting the Music App on your iPhone and starting again. This will also delete the app on your Apple Watch automatically. Sign out of iTunes and then signed back in. Reinstall the app on your iPhone. Reload your library on your iPhone. Finally, I synched all of the tracks and playlists I wanted to play on my iPhone and Apple Watch again. This seemed to work for me. The battery is back to normal. In the battery health tab it says the Music app is behaving normally. I also recommend signing out of iTunes and clearing any tracks off all peripheral devices except your main music library.

UPDATE: I killed the music app (force quit) then powered down the phone. After about a minute I powered up the phone again and it’s been working as normal since then. See attached screenshot which is a big difference from when I had the problem. Good to have the issue sorted!

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that you've noticed a rapid decrease in your battery life when listening to Apple Music. This is occurring most often when you use the lyrics option while listening to music. 

Nice work thinking to check the battery usage first. Next, check to see what the iPhone is reporting for the health of the battery. Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health You'll want to look at the Maximum Capacity and see if it is reporting Peak Performance Capability. This article will give you more details: iPhone Battery and Performance. 

If you see a message about the battery health, see if it matches any of the ones which are listed in the article. 

If there is no message, begin by quitting the Music app with these steps: How to force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. 

Once it is closed, Restart your iPhone, and see if there is any change.

I noticed that when I went into the music app there were a few songs that were downloading seemingly infinitely stuck on that icon cycling. I managed to get them downloaded and thereis no more cycling. I figured that was the issue causing the app to run in the background all the time. I'll see in a day or two if the drain stops I suppose.

Update: I turned off Auto Downloads, and the issue seems to have stopped.

It seems I found the fix for the problem on my iPhone.

what I did:

• I opend the Music app
• Played a song and activated the lyrics option
• Then I disabled the lyrics option and forced closed the music app.

The battery drainage stopt en in the battery view the music app isn’t listed anymore.

This problem began with an Apple Music launch. There are a lot of complains about the issue on apple’s reddit, but they pretend that the problem does not exist and answer with solutions they did not even try.

The problem is the Apple Music app. Yes, only the app. It drains battery even in flight mode, LPM and all other apps killed.

Occasionally matched tracks fail to download to my phone. Usually there’s just one or two errors on one playlist. The spinning download icon keeps cycling indefinitely. It seems to be an issue with matched tracks from my personal library. I’m not sure if this is the culprit but generally I get issues with matched/icloud tracks rather than Apple Music subscription tracks. The Apple music app gets stuck in a cycle trying to download these rogue tracks.

Anyway this might not be the issue. However it is easy to carry around several playlists with a mix of subscription and matched tracks and not notice. If just one is stuck in cycle mode it could be the source of the drain. Is this enough to cause a heavy drain on the battery is the question.

My mom has been having the same issue on her iPhone 6s. She doesn’t have an Apple Watch and Apple Music is not running on her iMac login.

Background App Refresh is off so

not sure what is going on either.

In the last 24 hours is it is showing 1 min on screen and 9 hours 10 min in background for Music.

Going to try turning off Automatic Updates for Software Update and Automatic Downloads for Music under her Apple ID.

Same. Iphone X newly bought. IOS 13. Batt health is 100%.

but when I use Apple Music with lyrics, my phone overheats or gets too warm. Somehow it’s okay if I run it in the background. I also tested restarting it (background app refresh is off) but when I used Apple Music with lyrics, one song can drain it to 5%.

Watching a youtube video does not even do this.

Same problem here with an iphone 6 and ios 12.4. My battery health is 100%. Apple Music don't stop trying to download the music even if he can't, and even after a reboot. It drains my battery and overheat my iphone. What is strange is that the battery is still drained even after removing the app. I never had this problem before trying to use Apple Music.

when I opened the Apple Music app a couple days ago it gave a message about some new feature and I just click ok. Since then my battery has been decimated. See screen shots which shows Apple Music guzzling my battery in two hours. Up until a couple of days ago I was getting approx 6-8 hours out of my battery, now I’m getting about 1-3 hours if I’m lucky. What ever it is apple need to fix it! I was very close to going off spending money to get my battery replaced, but it doesn’t seem to be the issue as there are so many other people with similar experiences.

Same problem with my iphone X on since iOS 13 update.

Without lyrics it runs normal , but with lyrics it drains 10% of battery with each song(3-4 mins).

Waiting for this fix so long but this problem is not even fixed with iOS 13.6.

Apple just neglecting this issue.

I experience this weird issue as well whenever I use my Apple Music Live Lyrics function, I use iPhone 7 Plus running iOS 13.4.1 as of writing. Is there a fix for this issue. I thought I was the only one experiencing this issue.
