MacBook Pro 10.15.3 Catalina Camera Fails : Hardware ??

My MacBook Pro 10.15.3 Catalina appears to have developed a hardware fault with the camera that fails to work when using FaceTime, Photo Booth, Facebook Video etc although the green LED stays on for a short period of time, then starts flashing before the timeout occurs when using FaceTime with the obvious error "FaceTime has not received any video from the connected camera". This used to work and o additional apps have been installed, so from a system perspective, there has been no apparent changes from the time this used to work so not sure why now and even after reboots and I am seeing the following in the system logs....

StartHardwareStream: creating frame receiver:  1280 x  720 (420v)   [29.97,29.97]fps

FrameReceiverMessageCallback: FrameDoneTimeout:

StopHardwareStream

VCVideoCaptureServer [NOTICE] -[VCVideoCaptureServer init]_block_invoke:217 @=@ Health: VideoCapture cameraPreviewCount=0, cameraCaptureCount=0, serverPreviewCount=0, serverCaptureCount=0

VCVideoCaptureServer [ERROR] -[VCVideoCaptureServer init]_block_invoke:229 frameBecameAvailableCount returned error -2146893808

So is this truly a hardware issue and if so, how do I rectify this (what is the process to do so) ?

Is this a driver issue for the hardware and should I go ahead and re-image/re-install the OS ?

Has anyone seen this previously ?

Hello rdaviesgbr,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities, and I understand the camera is not working with your Mac. I'll do what I can to help.

Based on what you've found, it might be best to try those steps, but first, try doing Apple Diagnostics to see if the issue appears there: How to use Apple Diagnostics on your Mac

If nothing appears on Apple Diagnostics, try to narrow it down with safe mode and a new user:

Enjoy.

Hi, I am getting the same error since yesterday. 2 days ago the camera worked fine, the day after it stopped working showing this error text (after 3/4 seconds of green light on, the one beside the camera):

"FaceTime has not received any video from the connected camera. Restarting your computer may fix this issue."

This is my laptop info:

The Camera seems to be correctly setup:

I called the Apple support team and followed several ways to resolve it without success""

  • Run diagnostics -> the camera seems to be correctly setup
  • Cancel the PRAM -> Same issue
  • Trying in the safe mode boot -> Same issue
  • Create a new user profile -> Same issue
  • Terminal, “sudo killall VDCAssistant” -> Same issue
  • Reinstall Catalina -> Same issue

It is really disappointing and, in this period, really frustrating. I owned several Apple/MS based laptops and never experienced an issue like this. Basically it looks like the camera is correctly setup but is not working.

Now I have 2 ways:

  1. Contact an approved service provider and try to arrange with them a solution.
  2. Ask Apple to collect the laptop and let them investigate the issue.

Unfortunately, after having spent 2K+ to have the best laptop I could buy now both the above solutions will cost me something. :(

Is someone else experienced the same issue, and confirm how much it would cost to have this resolved?

Thank you,

Giuseppe

Verify you have updated your software and installed:

Combo update macOS 10.15.4 https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2037?locale=en_US

also the Supplemental update, to address camera issues?

Download macOS Catalina 10.15.4 Supplemental Update https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2038?locale=en_US

Just a quick update on this issue.

I took the leap of faith and erased both partitions and then re-imaged from a base system (cmd-R on power up).

Once there, I then tested both FaceTime and Photo Booth and unfortunately the same issue existed with the Camera LED cycling for 4 secs, off for 1 sec until timeout and the no image FaceTime error. CMD-D on power up reported no issues and System Report - Camera also correctly identified the FaceTime HD Camera as being present .....BUT.....when booted into Safe Mode (CMD-Shift), this reported under system report - camera, that "No video capture devices were found" and apparently, it is this that correctly determines this to be a specific hardwire fault with the camera :-(

So my options at this point are :-

  1. Buy a new MacBook Pro
  2. Use an authorised Apple store to pay for the repair of a new camera
  3. Use an external web camera as an alternative
  4. Do nothing

I'm having the same issue since March 17th, I tried every trick I could find in forums.

Sometimes I can get the camera to work for a second and then shut off (green light turns on and then off).

Something is creating a conflict, and I think that the Mac users should be able to at least investigate the issue. It's really difficult to last the Corona isolation without a web camera.

This is my mac:

Many thanks for the reply, I went through these steps and the diag output indicated "No issues found : ref code ADP000" and created another user also generated the same and "No camera available" when Photo Booth and FaceTime were used, so then tried to re-install the latest update, same issue, so although I'm a little loath to try to fallback to the original OS, then update to the latest, this appears to be my only other option before declaring a definitive hardware fault, which in itself is a little annoying but then again it is over 4 yrs old (Nov 2016) :-)

Interestedly I tried this again using a test account and launched both Photo Booth and then FaceTime. In both instances the green indicator light was solidly on, however, the picture kept fluctuating between a valid image and then a dark screen with both apps. I then went back to my admin user account and the same occurred.

Looking at the system logs, not sure if these error’s are relevant, so posting here as an FYI (just in case)…

Cleary there is an interrupt occurring for some reason, hence dropping frame and what does this error indicate :-

FlowIC00: MIPI error (interrupt source = 0x2) kernel 0x6c2 ??

Whilst this could still be a hardware issue, the following system logs appear to be of interest. Can I get assistance to decode these and if there are additional events I need to focus on ?

Here is the system log flow....

Hi,

Same thing here. I restore and hard restore my MBP 2017 yesterday (after trying all of other solutions of course) in order to fix this issue and It doesn't fix nothing.

This morning I restarted my MBP and I retried to launch FaceTime, and the camera worked (just magic)... After relaunching the app many times, its fails again and the camera doesn't work anymore.

It's just disappointing and I loose a lot of time on this issue on my +2K$ MBP and I'm now facing the same options as you and I really hope an official solution other than simply replacing the hardware during the isolation.

Both 10.15.4 and the supplemental update have been applied from the initial post of this issue and sadly, when in Safe Mode, the Camera (under System-Camera) still indicates as not present, even though when not in Safe mode, the camera is correctly identified, so my options still stand and I see that one user has adopted the repair and replacement of the camera to resolve this issue.

I have some updates, maybe somebody will have an idea from it.

I bought a USB webcam and it received it yesterday (Corona days deliveries are slow). The webcam is a nameless brand you can see here.

When I connected it, it turned on and what was really strange is that at that time the MBP also turned on (I could see the light) and I could switch between both cameras in applications (Photobooth, Zoom, etc.) and received video feeds.

I checked and found that at that time the "VDCAssistant" started running again, so I thought to myself "it was probably a driver issue".

It worked perfectly for half an hour and then I turned it off.

2 hours later I had a video meeting in Google Meet, at that time I realised that the MBP camera turns on and off roughly every 5 seconds, and the USB camera turns on and off every 5-10 minutes.

The AppleCameraAssistant and VDCAssistant keep running, and when I kill them like most tutorials show, the symptoms of turning on and off remain, and eventually the USB camera feed just freezes or turns completely black.

So, now the processes issue is resolved, but the cameras keep turning on and off and freeze.
