Blurry Fonts in MacOS Catalina for Non-Retina Displays

When I plug my external non-retina display (Dell SE2719) into my MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015 running MacOS Catalina 10.15.3 (19D76)) all system fonts appear blurry with no smoothing. My retina display on the macbook looks fine so the issue is only with the external monitor--they're connected with an HDMI.

I've read online about this partial fix (terminal command: defaults write -g CGFontRenderingFontSmoothingDisabled -bool NO) but it only partially fixes it in code editors.

I'm wondering if there are any updates about when Apple plans to address this... Would be pretty crummy for them to no longer support users connecting to any third party non-thunderbolt monitors.
