macbook air keyboard isn’t working? need it for virtual school!!!

so my computer opened up a screen yesterday saying “keyboard not found” and that it was searching for a keyboard... but i’ve only ever used the internal keyboard! all of the sudden, it just turned off. when i plug in the charger, the light turns on, but when i plug in usb chargers to charge other devices, it doesn’t work. i’ve tried turning it on and resetting it using all the keyboard options, but they aren’t working so i think it’s a keyboard issue. can someone please help!!! me and my family share this computer and 4 of us have virtual school where we need this computer!! all the stores are shut down too so i can’t go service it. :((

Try an SMC reset. If your laptop has USB-C ports, then go to the section for T2 systems. If your built-in keyboard has a hardware failure, then this is unlikely to work. Unfortunately the SMC reset can only be performed using the built-in keyboard.

If you are able to boot the laptop, then try using an external keyboard. If the external keyboard works, then it confirms your built-in keyboard is defective and needs repaired.

If the laptop won't boot after attempting an SMC reset, then check out Apple article for trouble-shooting power adapter & charging port issues:

If none of this helps, then you will need to get the laptop repaired. While the Apple Stores are closed for at least another week you may be able to find a local Apple Authorized Service Provider which is open.

Perhaps you can contact the virtual school to see if they can provide you with a laptop.
