144 hz Monitor stuck at 60 hz

I recently purchased a Samsung Curved Monitor capable of a 144 hz. However, in System preferences, under the display settings for said monitor, the menu for refresh rate is disabled (dark gray coloring) and set to 60 hz. Am I missing some drivers, or does not my computer 144 hz output?

Even if your mac supported more than 60 GHz (it does not)

Your USB C Hub also only support max 60 GHz too (if the oneI found is the correct one)

https://www.amazon.com/HyperDrive-Type-C-Adapter-50Gbps-MacBook/dp/B01MUAEI7J

HDMI Video Output – 1080p @ 60 Hz up to 4k @ 30Hz

and from your mac tech spec:

Video Support

Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display at millions of colors and:

  • One display with 5120-by-2880 resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors
  • Up to two displays with 4096-by-2304 resolution at 60Hz at millions of colors
  • Up to two displays with 3840-by-2160 resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors

Seeing you did not spesify what macbook pro 13 inch you have, I will list all the tech specs from 2015 to today:

2019: https://support.apple.com/kb/SP795?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

2018: https://support.apple.com/kb/SP775?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

2017: https://support.apple.com/kb/SP754?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

2016: https://support.apple.com/kb/SP795?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

2015: https://support.apple.com/kb/SP715?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

And the max they all support for an external display is a refresh rate of 60Ghz

So yeah, your macbook cannot send more than 60GHz to your external display.

Hope this answered your question!

If your display can do DisplayPort family, it can get higher resolutions with fewer limitations and your computer will stay cooler.

HDMI was invented for HD TV sets. It has been stretched several times, and each time the newer equipment LOOKS almost the same as the older, less capable equipment. Even if you can assemble the correct combinations, they often fail to work due to "just because".
