Magic Mouse 1 not scrolling

Just updated my iPad Pro to iPadOS 13.4, and was able to pair my Magic Mouse 1 to it. Point and click work just fine, however can't get scrolling gesture to work. Is this a known bug or is it just me ?

Apple documentation is very clear as to the user interface devices supported by the iPadOS 13.4 update. The Apple Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Trackpad 2 all have full support - plus generic support is added for third-party input devices.

The original Magic Mouse and Trackpad were not designed or intended to operate with iPadOS - and whilst not supported by iPadOS, remain fully operable with the Mac computers for which they were designed to operate.

Generic device support provides basic input functionality. For example, many Mice require a manufacturer-supplied “driver” to be installed to enable additional “buttons” (beyond the basic/generic left/right mouse-buttons) and any proprietary “touch” functionality. Additional device driver installation is not (and never has been) supported on iOS platforms. For this reason, basic devices, such as a “basic” mouse seem to have full OS support - whereas a feature-rich Mouse (with many bells-and-whistles) only provides its basic functions when connected to iPad.

Many here are clearly disappointed in that the older-generation Magic Mouse/Trackpad, expressly designed for Mac, are not supported by iPadOS - however, all computing systems have limits as to the type of devices that it can support. Older hardware and devices are often not forward-compatible with new operating systems.

To everyone here with a MagicMouse 1 or Magic TrackPad 1,

These are nearly 10 and 11 year old input devices!

Apple discontinued these in 2015!

They are not going to be updated and added to work with iPadOS.

The MM1 and MTP 1 were never intended to be used with anythng else, but a Mac.

MM 2 and MTP 2 superseded these.

Maybe Apple did something with MM2/MTP 2 that make them better suited to use with iPads and iPadOS.

You all want full mouse and trackpad support, you all are going to have to purchase version 2 of the Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad!

Simple as that!

OR

Purchase a cheaper, Bluetooth mouse option.

Good Luck to All!

Apple has clearly stated within the mouse settings on the iPad that any scrolling and gesture features of the MM 1 and the MTP 1 are not supported.

Apple has made this decision not to support 10-year old Apple input devices on their newer, compatible, mobile iOS devices.

Some basic functions of the MM 1and the MTP 1 work, but that is it!

You do not have to purchase and use the more expensive Apple MM 2 or the MTP 2.

You can choose use cheaper, iPadOS 13.4.1 compatible, third party mice and track pads, instead.

You have other alternative input devices available that may work.

Never going to happen, ever!

Apple will not allow the use of their over 10-year old wireless mice and trackpads when they have a much newer versions of these input devices that are still compatible with many of their latest computer and computing hardware.

Sorry, but that’s the reality.

If anyone in this posting think/feels they can change Apple’s thinking on this issue,

Everyone who posts here is free and welcome to submit feedback about this issue to Apple.

This is only one of the few ways to directly contact Apple about ANY product issues.

iPad Feedback

http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

Cognizant Apple employees read ALL feedback generated from all of the various feedback pages and transfers the data to the proper and responsible Apple teams and personnel, but NO Apple employees will ever respond with any type of direct, individual replies from the feedback you post.

The more users that post product feedback about any product issue, the faster Apple, in California, is made aware and starts working on a fix/solution for a future software update.

If no one posts feedback to Apple, Apple will have NO clue that there are any types of issues with their hardware or software products!

Good Luck to All!

I honestly do not know what Apple was thinking to not support the Magic Mouse 1 (yet). Many people share your frustration and hopefully Apple will support the Magic Mouse 1 and Magic Trackpad 1 in the near future. In the meantime maybe you could take the time to leave feedback for Apple here... https://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

We all know that besides the power source design there is no appreciable functionality difference between the Magic Mouse 1 and 2.

Thanks for sharing!

Took Apple 10 years to finally give iPads wireless mouse and trackpad support, when iPad users were clamouring for this feature since the original iPad!

You do the math and figure how long you think it will be before Apple will open up iPadOS full support for their 10-year old

Magic Mouse 1 and Magic Trackpad 1.

Seems like commonsense to me that Apple is not going to backwards support their 10-year old input devices on iPads when Apple is still supporting their 5-year old MM 2 and MTP 2 on many Apple products.

I own a iMac model that is NOT even compatible with the current MM 2 or MTP 2. My iMac is stuck with the option of the original 2009 MM 1 and MTP1 as these are the Apple input devices that were compatible with my over 10-year old, late 2009, 27 inch iMac, back then.

When the MM 2 or MTP 2 and Magic Keyboard 2 came out in 2015, my 6-year old iMac, then, did NOT support these now updated input devices. My iMac got left out!

Did I “birch” about that? No I didn't.

I found very good third party alternatives that have been working for me just fine and dandy for the past 5 years!

So, I do not even want to purchase a MM 2 or MTP 2, now, just to use with ONLY an iPad.

I will patently wait for cheaper, third party mice/trackpad makers to design and make new, fully iPadOS compatible set of wireless; Bluetooth mice and trackpads that do not have any issues or glitches with newer, future versions of iPadOS.

It is not going to happen for the MM 1 or MTP 1.

Sorry.

I have the Magic Mouse and Trackpad First Gen as well, and I’m using a modification for scrolling, which is not available for this model. In all fairness, there is only so far you can update firmware on older devices, and our first generation mice are older. The technology is older, and we’re trying to use it with the most recent technology. We’re able to do a lot with this mouse, and while I would love to be able to surface scroll, I do understand that there are going to be limitations with an older device. The gap is too wide to bridge.

But we have options. We can either get the Magic Mouse/Trackpad 2 or use the modified scroll gestures available for the first generation. If you think about how old 10.5.x was (Leopard, remember the last PPC-compatible OS?), the first gen magic mouse was compatible with that operating system. That might help put the timeline in perspective. We’re talking about an 11-year technological span.

Take this up with Apple per my links toward the top of this page.

You'll get nowhere here as we all just Apple product users here, just like you!

Debating, complaining, griping and moaning and groaning about this here is a useless and pointless effort.

Apple has already made the decision to not fully support its nearly 11-year old MM and MTP 1 models, but who knows.

If enough users gripe to this to Apple feedback and actually call about this to Apple support, Apple could change their minds.

It only took 9 years for external drive support, mouse support and trackpad support to come to iPads and iOS.

So, anything is possible.

Hi guys I think we can now all agree that there is nothing that can be done to push Apple to add support for this device. I came across this thread as I have the same problem and I do not want to fork out for a new mouse. So, why do we not start making suggestions of Bluetooth mice from other manufacturers that will give the full functionality we need?

Personally I’m not bothered about any gesture support, I just want movement, right and left click & a scroll wheel, very simple.

I use a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard with my 2018 iPad and it works great (K380 model), compact, typing experience is fine (this is not my main daily driver, just for occasional work). I also have a couple of Logitech 2.4ghz mice, which you obviously need the USB dongle for, which work fine, but then you need the adapter and probably it’ll moan about not delivering enough power (as it seems to with almost every device I plug into it!)

So, how about a list of 3rd party input peripherals that work well over blueTooth with the iPad?

Apr 24, 2020 3:42 PM in response to Guess313

If Apple did not fully support, “out of the gate”, the MM 1 and MTP 1 with the official mouse and trackpad support in iPadOS 13.4.1, then they are NOT going to in the future.

You have the right to not accept this fact. Doesn't`change the fact.

Apple is not allowing any of their older input devices to work with newer iPads compatible with iPadOS 13.4.1 and later iPadOS versions.

It is what it is.

Jun 27, 2020 9:00 PM in response to siddharth7

Because Magic Mouse 1 is now over a decade old. Apple doesn't support devices more than about 5 years. The drivers used over a decade ago are no longer compatible with the newer iPadOS.

This is no different than the people who come here every day with an iPad 2, 3 or 4 which is no longer supported and they don't understand why they can't get iPadOS 13 on their very old iPad.

Technology moves forward and if you want to have the latest options on old devices you'll just have to invest in newer devices.
