Renting movies from iTunes

I rented a movie from iTunes, for my iPad Air 3, and it will not play. I have tried contacting Apple support, but the agent who answered could not answer my question. She said she was contacting iTunes for help. She and I waited for about 40 minutes and got no response. So we gave up. I have already paid for the rental, so am not happy about this. (My apologies if I accidentally posted this more than once - this website is not easy to use.)

Hey there Calgary2019,

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities about the issue you're having with a piece of rented content. I'd be glad to see what I can do to help.

You mentioned that the content isn't playing on your iPad. Are you seeing any sort of error message when you attempt to start that up? If so, what does it say? That'll go a long way towards helping us get this solved. A great starting point for troubleshooting can be found in If you can't stream or watch movies or TV shows from the Apple TV app, iTunes Store, or third-party apps, so if you haven't checked that out, do so now.

That should get you taken care of up to and including reporting a problem officially, which would be the next step if the steps in the above site don't solve your problem.

Hopefully this will get things sorted for you.

Have a great day!

Thanks for the info, Calgary2019.

It's great to hear that you were able to get a refund on the rental fee.

In some cases, changing the region on your device can remove availability of some types of content. You can see a little more about what else could be affected by changing the region of your Apple ID in Change your Apple ID country or region. If you need further clarification, you might want to Contact Apple Support and work directly with a billing and subscription specialist. They'll be able to verify if the existing rental can be viewed after changing to a different region than the one in which it was rented.

Be good!

Thanks for trying. I checked out the "change ID country" page. It says "Before you update your information, you need to spend your store credit, cancel your subscriptions, and get a payment method for your new country or region." I don't think that is worth doing just to get access to a single movie.

As for contacting Apple Support, as I said above, I did contact them and the agent I spoke to waited over 30 minutes to get through to an iTunes agent, without success. We gave up at that point. I don't think I'll try that again.

I think I'll just chalk this one up to (bad) experience; and I won't try to purchase anything from Apple when I am out of my own country.

Thanks for you kind offer to help. When I go to "Library", the thumbnail for the movie I rented appears. When I hit "play," I get the following message: "This video can't be played because you don't have access to it or it's no longer available." When I click "OK" I am taken back to the Library. This has been the case for the last month.

I had already followed all of the procedures described in the link you provided. One thing that has occurred to me is that, although I am Canadian, I rented the movie while I was in the United States, on holiday. I can't see how that would make a difference, but this is the first time I have had this problem and it is the first time I rented a movie while out of the country.

Apple TV now says that I have 3 days left on my rental; but in the interest of full disclosure, at some point in the last couple of days, Apple has refunded my rental fee.
