mic on imac doesn't work

imac is about 8 years old

OS 13.10.6 no updates when i look

all system preferences settings are correct

mic on headset does seem to work

would really like to have the computer's internal microphone to work

Reset the iMac's SMC, as per > How to reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support
Reset the iMac's NVRAM, as per > Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
Try un-muting your Output Volume, if the NVRAM reset doesn't take care of that for you.
