how can I get rid of "other" in my storage?

I have my storage full because of "other" in the storage, and I was thinking of backing up my phone, and I was about to connect the phone to my MacBook Air but it doesn't connect because the iPhone doesn't have the latest update so I can't get rid of "other". And I have no other choice, is there another way of connecting the iPhone to my MacBook Air??

iPhone XS Max, iOS 13

“Other” is not just junk, but all storage not otherwise included in the colored categories. It may, however, include misc. files no longer in use, previously streamed videos, etc. The easiest way of clearing Other is to Restart your device.

Restart instructions: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201559

You should also review and clear unused apps and data via: Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
