This is from Forbes magazine from yesterday. This is the headline.

Apple Confirms New Warning Affecting Almost All iPhone Users

conclude as you wish but seems months of denial and false solutions/suggestions have been time/ money wasted. Let’s hope this patch comes soon!

Possibly, believe what you want, it gives an explanation what is leading to the battery drain, nobody else is. I don’t work for Forbes, I like everyone else want to be able to have a phone that lasts more than 2 hours when I use it for 45 mins out of a charger. 13.4.5 iOS update whenever that arrives will be my last straw!

QuickTimeKirk: It's amazing to me that you can read these posts and claim there is no problem. As I have stated, my iPad Pro went from 20 hours on a charge to 4 hours, and many many others in this thread have cited similar loss of functionality. No one disputes that Forbes is a for-profit news outlet but that doesn't negate the experiences people are having. No one wants to trash Apple - indeed, we are typically loyal and have enjoyed good service from these devices. At the same time, we have seen dramatic loss of functionality that impairs our devices. That's a problem any time - but especially during a pandemic when people need reliable technology.

I know you are not a moderator. How do you know that he knows what he is talking about.

I'm sorry but being direct is not rude. Someone saying they are going to toss an iPhone in the trash is not mature. That phone could be donated to a women's domestic violence center. And threatening volunteers that you are going to go by a Samsung is really just silly, and immature.

I've been an early adopter also. And I am older than you. I know what I am talking about.

Ok give this a try.

go to Settings/ General/Background app refresh.

turn off all apps individually then turn the service off at the top of the screen. Leave for twelve hours and reboot phone.

After 12 hours turn the service back on and start turning the apps you want back on a few at a time.

I could turn all mine on and the phone cpu has gone from 95% all the time to 15-20% and my battery is at 75% after 8 hours mainly background use compared to flat by about this time.

leaving for 12 hours, rebooting the phone, turning all apps off individually may not be necessary but this is how I got mine to works after about a year of wanting to chuck it against the wall.

UPDATE:

Everything was fine for about 24 hours (really weird having a cold phone) but then I was watching some video's on Google Chrome & started to notice the phone warming up again & sure enough cpu back up to 97-98% & my phone was back to being a useless heap of garbage again.

Trying to get the cpu down again but what worked last time doesn't seem to be working yet so will try different ways of disable background app refresh.

I found this on the iOS wiki entry:

Battery lifespan extender[edit]

Similar to many laptops,[41] iOS 13 has a feature to limit the battery charging percentage to 80%.[42]

Keeping the battery percentage more centered instead of complete charges and discharges reduces strain onto the battery. This reduces the battery aging of the lithium-ion battery and extends its lifespan.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS_13

From what I know about lithium charging for solar, this makes perfect sense. However, it means sad times for any battery less than new in an upgrade. When they say "more centered", that also means they're taking some off the bottom too. So instead of 3%-100%, the new is more like 25%-80%, BUT the battery should last twice or 3 times as long before needing to be replaced.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if your "old" health was in the 80%s, your new would be about 62% and the bottom will be about 35%-40%?? BUT the reading will still say 0%-100%, it will just mean 0% equals the bottom of the CHARGE (20% if new) and 100% will mean 80% full.

And I'm guessing the new 13.4.1 is calibrating wildly and unexpectedly, causing quick shutdowns for less healthy batteries and short runtimes for moderately healthy batteries and ALL much less than before full access was granted. It's a long term win with less changes, buuuuuuuuuutttttttt it looks like it right now.

Inwallstore, you seem to assume all the devices we are speaking of in this discussion have old batteries, which is far from being correct. If for example, mine is just a little more than one year old, with 94% health. For sure, after one month with heavy 100% to 0% in a few hours (despite figures like 3m/1m screen on/off), its condition will probably deteriorate. In any case, having a older battery shouldn’t mean that someone’s device should be now useless just because it has been updated.

Apr 27, 2020 11:20 PM in response to Inwallstore

The age & health of the battery is almost irrelevant when the cpu is running pretty much flat-out all of the time when in use & still working hard when in standby.

As I mentioned in a couple of posts ago I actually managed to stop the cpu running flat-out but only for 24 hours & my battery lasted all day & still had a bout 40% left at the end of the day when I put it back on charge.

Now I back to draining the battery in under & hour when in use & maybe 6 hours on standby if I'm lucky.

Has anyone tried what I did to halt the battery drain?

I have experienced MONSTER battery drain. This iPhone SE was reliable for years, I installed the update, and it immediately began draining from full power to ~10% with less than an hour of use, and draining overnight just sitting there with no use at all. It’s been four days, so I don’t think it’s a “reindexing” thing. Something is badly wrong; I’m going to have to get a new phone if it can’t be fixed.

My XR has had good days and bad. After installing 13.4.1 my Contacts were consuming 60-70% of the battery. Makes no sense. I've cleaned out little used apps, stopped Siri totally, changed Fetch settings and stopped all Background Refreshes. I refresh the phone every few days. Now my battery drain started again and it is my iCloud mail. 8 minutes on screen with 13 hours and 17 minutes in the background. Total screen time shows 1 hour and 8 minutes total and 8 minutes of it was working Mail yet Mail consumed 56% of the battery and my Contacts are at it again with 1 minute of screen time taking 35% of the battery. These apps are Apple products, not 3rd party. I've never experienced this type of wild battery drain in the past.

8 minutes of Mail useage should not consume
