You have my sympathy! I don’t think Apple take much notice of these discussions or their customers. I have called them (yesterday) - as usual, no admission of guilt.

Since updating to 13.4.1 battery drain has become crazy, I personally had no problems (apart from FaceTime) with 13.4

Phone was on low power mode to help reduce draining (Shown by the yellow bars in the graph below). That idea worked (not!), so I turned it off for the evening. I charged it last night and all went well until I started using the phone at around 11am. See how the screen off time (light blue bars) go crazy and the battery level plummets - I only used the phone to see how the battery was, literally 30 seconds! Since then I haven’t used the phone except to check the battery every hour or so, yet this quick usage seems to have triggered the battery draining bug.

There’s a huge bug in the OS, all we have to do is get Apple to take some notice!

After messing with this iPhone X for hours and hours since the battery draining problem started, with ios 12.4.1, I think I have found the cause.

If I remove the Mail app then all runs normally! Great! If I want to use my phone without recharging every few hours I can’t have email! Perfectly reasonable? No is the answer. I was fully expecting a quick update from Apple since my very long and unfruitful conversation with them last Thursday.

This confirms that Apple are no longer a force to be reckoned with and that, over the years, I have wasted around £5000 on ipads and iphones that are effectively now just overpriced, underperforming pieces of junk.

some might say that there’ll probably be a fix at some point. I say it should have been virtually instant considering the ridiculous cost of these devices. Why did we buy Apple? Because they had (and I stress “had”) the reputation of being well made and reliable. This is no longer the case. With each iteration of the operating system comes bugs, inadequacies and a strange belief that just making things ‘look’ different makes us grateful when in fact, their new layouts and pretty graphics are no real improvement. Functionality is lost through new never ending deeply embedded illogical menus.

Where has quality control gone? Where has reliability gone?

To show my reasoning regarding “Mail”, the graph below shows a drop in activity when I removed the Mail app at around 16:00, the battery then behaved as it would normally, that is to say, ever since I bought this awful device - and others.

As soon as Mail was reinstalled at around 21:30 the activity rocketed again showing between 48 and 59 minutes per hour! All mail accounts had been removed so no fetching of data and high wifi usage, so you’d think - this is just because the app merely ‘exists’ on the phone!

I wish everyone that is suffering with this the best of luck. When you need to replace your prematurely exhausted battery don’t forget to ask Apple for some compensation because of the problem their ‘just out of college’ programmers have caused.

The problem is wholly IOS13 & its not only battery drain problems with Mail working when it feels like it being a major part of the problem.

I have an SE & it was fine on ios12 but as soon as I upgraded to ios13 my smart phone was converted into a short lived hand & ear warmer that crashed, rebooted, didn't know how much power was or wasn't in the battery, checked for new mail when it could be bothered, wouldn't search & a few other things.

The screenshot below gives you some idea of what's causing it.

The one below that shows how quick my battery can drain & the screen time on & off is just total garbage.

Apple basically have a blanket policy of denying all problems with everything unless they are forced to make a statement but as they give the IOS away for free why should they admit it's a total heap of crap.

I hate my iPhone right now & will seriously consider Android when this one dies. Why should I buy another iPhone that is basically useless.

Hello,

First, you can check your battery status in the Settings app through Setting > Battery > Battery Health. Any level under 80% indicates that you could very well experience battery problems due to aging of the battery.

If your battery starts draining much faster after a software update and the battery health is fine, you could try restoring your iPhone using Finder (on a Mac) or iTunes (on a PC). You can find instructions on how to do that at:

Please ensure you first make a backup in iCloud so you can restore it after restoring the iPhone.

Oh, really? Prove me wrong then! Or, have the huge number of people who have suddenly developed mass-battery-drain all done exactly the same thing, to cause the problems?

Errr, no, they haven't!

All we've done, is update our iPhones. It's the singular common-denominator that links everyone's sudden mass-battery-drain.

So, unless you can come-up with a solution, other than the usual "wipe then restore" or" you'll need a battery replacement" fixes, please leave the discussion!

I'm very sure I DO know what restoring an iPhone does, thanks. But restoring it hasn't fixed the battery drain issue. It fixes many issues, but not this one. Just look at these Forums to see that.

Again, please don't make mass assumptions that infrequent or lower-level-rated Apple Forum users are somehow braindead simpletons. We aren't. Just because you have 700 points, or are on Level Whatever, doesn't make you better than the rest of us.

Apple needs to fix this issue, and STOP having Level Whatever's constantly pass the buck onto user's, onto user's devices, and trot-out excuses about reindexing, restoring, or doing resets. The problem is inherent in the iOS itself. Something in the iOS is causing the drain!

You’ve already been given good advice that works, but you rejected it. Every time an iOS is released a FEW devices may exhibit battery drain. It is NEVER iOS - well, actually it was once 8 years ago, and garnered almost 13,000 posts at a time when there were only 1/10 as many phones as there are today, and on top of that it only affected 5% of phones that were using MS Exchange AND had a repeating event in the calendar. But other than that one instance, it is an app that did not correctly manage the version transition.

And there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve it, one of which will always work:

  • Restart the phone
  • Kill all apps in the quick launch screen and restart
  • Use the phone for a day, then check Settings/Battery to see which app it is, delete it and reinstall it
  • And if all else fails, a restore to factory settings, followed by restoring a backup will always fix it.

But Apple should be addressed. Thank you.

Then, by all means, take it up with Apple. You can start with the "Contact Support" link at the top right of every page of these forums. Note that support is overwhelmed right now and it may take a while to get through.

You can also submit feedback here:

You won't get a response but your comments and suggestions will get read by the appropriate people.

Jumping in again to add that I have an iPad Pro, which worked perfectly with 20 hours on a charge. Upgraded to iOS 12, battery dropped to 4 hours. Then iOS 13, and all its permutations, still 4 hours. There is an issue with these operating system updates demanding too much of devices that came out the year before.

The best thing for those of us with Apple devices who simply want them to work again is to go to Apple feedback and leave messages for the engineers. I do this a couple of times a week.
