I just took delivery of my brand new LG 38" Ultrawide monitor, yesterday Model: 38WK95C.
I have a brand new MacBook Pro 16" that I got a few days earlier.
I plugged in the monitor with the supplied USB-C cable and was shocked at how bad the colors were. They were extremely hot (pinks were neon hot pink, blues looked more like a purplish indigo and the whites had a greyish tinge. To add insult to injury, there was no way to adjust most of them in the on screen controls as most of the options were greyed out an inaccessible. Contrast, Color Temp, even all of my gaming related controls were inactive. The only thing I could do was adjust brightness and flip through four preset HDR related options; but they were all just as bad as the default one.
I spent the better part of a day doing research online trying to figure out what was wrong and how to fix it. Most things I found said that it was a limitation of the USB-C connectivity and that I should use HDMI instead. I didn't want to do that as I wanted to have the single cord charging and connectivity.
And for a monitor that was around $1200, I didn't want to settle for that.
It wasn't until about 30 minutes ago, after failing to get through to LG's support (due to COVID-19 related hour restrictions) that I came across this page.
You have no idea how happy I am that it's not my monitor that is defective. I was beginning to think I would need to return the monitor and find a replacement.
Any idea when there will be a fix that will allow me to turn HDR back on, and not affect my ability to use my monitor's settings?
If I can provide any further details that helps with the troubleshooting process, I'm happy to help.
If it weren't for the fact that I just pulled this out of the box, yesterday, and it was bad from the get go, I would have been more inclined to look into the apple side of things. I had no reason to suspect that, though, and instead assumed that it was the monitor that was problematic.
To think I almost returned this beautiful monitor.
:(
Thank you to the person who suggested temporarily turning off HDR. I just hope there's a solution that fixes this, sometime soon.
