Restoring my iPad

I have been trying to restore an iPad I have that I got locked out of a year ago due to forgetting the password. Every time I attempt to restore it with iTunes it gets to the step that it says preparing iPad for Restore then a popup appears saying "Unknown error occurred". I have fully updated my MacBook Air, restarted it, and changed cables that is connecting the iPad. How can I restore this iPad???
