I no longer receive notification sounds on my iphone 11 when I receive text messages. I’ve checked it in settings but it still doesn’t alert me. I just set up an Apple watch which vibrates with messages but not on phone any longer.

Doesn't have to be in front of your face, if your iPhone is unlocked messages will go there. If it is locked it will go to your Watch. That is by design.
The setting on my watch says that notifications will come over my watch if my iphone is locked or sleeping. It’s always locked since I have face recognition to open it. Settings on my phone shows under do not disturb that that even if DND is not on, under Silence there are only 2 options: “Always” or “While phone is locked”. Can’t uncheck both.
So if my phone is not in front of my face, I will not get notifications for messages??
