Problem with Safari & google classroom

I am a teacher using google classroom for the first time during this new remote learning situation. Everything was working fine until the Safari 13.1 update that happened yesterday 3/25. Now when I'm on google classroom, none of the files will display on the page and when I click on them it says "couldn't preview file, there was a problem displaying this image." Also when I tried clicking on a video link in my gmail account I got another error message "An error occurred. Please try again later."

Can anyone please help me fix this?

Do you have any Parental Controls set on the child's user account?

Try Safari/Preferences/Privacy and uncheck Prevent cross-site tracking.

If you boot the child's account into the Safe Mode, does it work?

Safari can’t open a website.

 Safari – slow page loads.

Safari - Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues.

Safari doesn't load a page or webpage items are missing.

I do have parental controls and I have thought all along it may be an option there, but I cannot find it. I will try some of your suggestions and let you know.

On the last link you provided, it says the following. (This seems to accurately describe the problem.)

  • Some images, videos, or other items aren't displayed on a webpage, but other page elements load.

Check Parental Controls

If you're logged into a user account that is restricted by Parental Controls or other web filtering software, some pages or page elements might not load if those sites aren't allowed. For example, embedded videos might not display if they're hosted on a site other than the one you're viewing.

Are you running any anti - virus programs? Using a VPN?

Try setting up another admin user account in System Preferences/Users & Groups to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.

Safe Mode - About.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. If the log won’t post, try posting it in Pastebin and provide a link in a reply. After pasting the report in a PasteBin page, go to the top of the page, and copy the address in the URL bar. Paste that in a new reply.        Pastebin.

Eric,

Thank you for your in depth response. I was on the phone with apple support for over 30 minutes doing a lot of trouble shooting and they were not able to solve the problem other than having me use the private window in Safari to open the site-then it all loaded properly.

Apparently google has been having a lot of difficulties with their services today. They are aware of my specific problem and are working on it on their end.

I am having the same problem (specifically with JPG files—I haven’t tried videos and PDF files work fine). A temporary way around it is to right click and download the images. When I download the images, I can view them in downloads, but I still cannot see previews or access the files within Google Classroom.

I don't believe it has to do with Google. It is something with Safari and here is why: It’s working just fine on Firefox. I only have the problem with Safari. Even weirder is that the problem only occurs on my child’s user account on our computer. When I log into her Google Classroom with her credentials on my user account, it works just fine. I think it is some setting in Safari, but I cannot find it yet.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have been right clicking to open items in a new window so I can see them. It is a problem for jpgs, pdf, and videos for me. It just annoys me that I can't easily see it all on the same page but not enough to make me download another browser! I was on the phone with apple support going through a ton of settings changes and nothing helped except opening in a private window.

Hi Eric, I am not the OP, but you seem knowledgable. I was having the same issue as OP (and am still having it). It is only an issue on one user account on my computer and only with the browser, Safari. It must be a setting in Safari, I'm thinking.

When I log into my computer user account and log into Google Classroom with my child's credentials, it works. On both user accounts, it works with other browsers. It is only a problem in Safari on my child's user account. Do you have any ideas? Is there a Safari setting to block file previews or something? It is actually possible to still download the files, it just blocks the previews and you cannot click on and view the attachment within Google Classroom. You have to download it to see the file. Do you know of any such setting in Safari?

Thanks so much (and thank you to OP for posting this question)!
