Mute Button in Facetime??

Friend just got an iPhone, we wanted to Facetime. She called me. Video worked in both directions, her audio worked fine but mine did not. My Mic/Mute icon had a slash through it. Tapping turned it gray or white, but the slash remained. Yes the mic works just fine, yes I have used it in other apps. No hardware issues. I check Settings/FaceTime, nothing there relating to not using the mic. Nothing in Settings/Accessibility seems to relate.

I look in Settings/Privacy/Microphone. Facetime is NOT listed there. Hmmmm. Nor is Zoom, a teleconference utility we are using for meetings/interviews in this corona age. I check the Camera section... Zoom IS listed with permission granted, but again, Facetime is NOT listed.

The person who called had just activated the phone so everything was in box-stock default.

Nothing IN Facetime unless IN a call, so NO indication WHY it appears to be actually disabled. VERY annoying... and yes, 13.4 for iOS.

What can I do?

iPad, iOS 9

I always dread that advice (but thank you for trying) because resetting everything wipes out work that occured over years and years tinkering to get it just right! After I made the post I realized I had passed over one very obvious thing... stuff which I knew instantly back in the day, but take a while to think of now. The user had their volume all the way down!

BUT I still want to know why both the camera and audio buttons show the "do not, not available" backslashes through them.
