iOS update issues on my iPhone 7 Plus

I updated the new iOS to 13.4 now when I try to make a phone call I can’t hear anything and vice versa. The speaker part on the phoned is greyed out, everything else on my phone works my phone will ring, speakers work, etc.

theres nothing in my settings that will allow me to delete the updated version. I’ve restarted it to no avail. I don’t wait to reset to factory settings. Is anyone else having this issue and is Apple doing anything to resolve this? Like I said this happened after the update so I know that’s what’s causing this.

thank you.

Fellow victims...

i have been doing research and research and ....

Apple support might be right. It does look like a hardware issue. iphone 7 and iphone 7+ do have a structure issue where the phone can bend under stress. I spent hours with Apple support and ATT support to understand the issue. All the research pointed to IC chip failure & bending iphone 7.

In my case, i was using a case with a magnet to stick to my car dash and stuffing a credit card at times. Could have resulted in iphone bend in micro millies.

All I did was remove the case; turn off the phone; try to bend it backwards with very little pressure; restart it. Voila...! it works like a charm. Definitely looks like a loose solder on the IC chip. Dont know how long it will work.. intend to re-solder the chip if happens again.

Why it failed on a software upgrade... and why it was working until an upgrade, I don't know (apple sure does..!). But it might be the same issue if Apple provides an upgrade or allows up to roll back to 13.5

It might not work for everyone considering how much stress you put on your phone.

Try it out and comment...

Hi,

I had the same problem on my iPhone 7+ , now he's in service ( nothing else helped: no other firmware, no software reset). There they told me that this is a very common problem on 7&8 iPhones, the small audio chip on the motherboard is to blame for everything. I hope you have already solved your problem, and I will leave this message here for the next people who encounter this problem.

Have a nice day

As they said in your text, you could trade it in towards a new iPhone assuming there is nothing else wrong with it, if it is a 7 Plus you can get $130. Your other option would be find a 3rd party repair site that can do micro soldering. They can repair the Audio IC but you may not be able to receive Apple service on this phone in the future.

Hey there Mjf0527,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. I understand you’re having some issues with the audio and mic on your iPhone during a call. I’ll be happy to help.

If the speaker is greyed out while on a call, your iPhone may have a hardware issue. To help determine if this is the case and possible resolve this issue, go through the steps in this link:

If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker

If you’re having issues with the microphones on your iPhone, follow the guidance in this link:

If the microphones on your iPhone aren't working

Regards.

That’s true. Only someone with experience working on microelectronics hardware, and who has the appropriate tools, can do it. That’s why the more practical advice is to arrange a repair through Apple or contact a 3rd party repair shop that has the tools and experience. KoKoNotChanel has such experience, apparently. While going to 3rd party repair would void any remaining warranty, that shouldn’t be a serious impediment. If it still has a warranty Apple will repair it for free.

hi guys,

Finally I took encourage from the advice of KoKoNotChanel to get its replaced Audio IC at a third party store here in Vietnam. Dusty cheap, only 28 USD. and my phone is working now. I have switched to Samsung M51 already however this iPhone 7Plus is an souvenir so I didn't want it to be dead.

My question now is: "My IOs is now on 14.4.2. There is an update 14.5.1. would it be possible to kill the audio IC again if I do upgrate to this new version?" Thank you for your sharing and advice.

Hi Mjf0527

Thanks for providing those details. If the steps from the above articles had no impact on this issue, the next step would be to back up your iPhone, restore it to factory settings, and test in that condition. These articles can guide you on how to do this:

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

If the issue doesn’t continue to occur in the factory state, restore your backup and test once more:

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup

If the issue continues to occur in factory settings, you’ll want to reach out to Apple Support at the following link to look further into this with you:

Contact Apple for support and service

Take care.

Kathy ~ My iPhone doesn't have this particular problem. That feedback form is to make Apple aware of a problem and the number of users experiencing it. If it turns out to be a software problem, Apple will fix it in a subsequent iOS update. But for a hardware problem, this is where to start:
