My DVD and CD archives keep crashing my finder

I'm trying to find some old files and am having loads of problems. Many of my DVDs and CDs that I archived files on are running crazy slow, are hard to drill down through, crash my finder, can't open, or my iMac spits them out! I really am getting worried, the extent of unusable archived CDs is scaring me. I did the drill, kept on top of archiving files in duplicate, now I can't open half of them! Any ideas? A little desperate...

It’s a very long story, but in a nutshell I had an old failed external hard drive that I ended up pulling the drive out of (it was actually the housing that failed!) I put that drive in a dock and was able to recover everything. That said, no, my cd and dvd situation got no better, but at least I was able to recover my files in a different way. Thanks!
