If I have a project open on the timeline and I want to edit an image or something, I used to select "open in timeline" - don't see that now. How to edit something without adding it to the project pls?

It is Clip->Open Clip, but be sure that is really what you want to do.
It is not often that one has good reason to use this.
Can you elaborate on what you are trying to do?
You’re open the clip container when you do this. As Luis said this is not the way to use the application to edit. Create a project and edit into the project. Do everything inside the project. It’s very rare that one would need to go into the clip container in FCP.
For now, I inserted it into the timeline and transformed it then created a new compound clip (any other way of saving that transformed image?)
Plopped it on the front of the project then tried to drag the clip end to lengthen the intro but not allowed.
I'm obviously doing something wrong here!

Supplementary pls? I imported an mp4 clip and Clip>Opened it
It appears in the timeline (is that what it is still?) as audio and video. I used to be able to combine audio and video into one clip - how do I do that pls?
Why are you trying to open clip?
That is probably wrong.
The way you edit is to create a project and edit your clips into a project.
I fail to see why you' import a clip and right away use Open Clip.
Perhaps you can explain what you are trying to achieve with this.
Thanks for the help! The last time I used FCP X was several years ago. I want to import an mp4 clip and edit it - transform it and chop some bits out. As I recall, I'd import it then "open in timeline" (maybe the wrong thing to do?)
Right now, Clip>OPenClip works - it opens up a new view but oddly, the clip is split into audio and video and I see no way to combine them so now I am editing the two separately!
It’s not in the shortcut menu anymore but it is , Clip I think.
