Kernel panic sleep Catalina 15.4

Hi,

Ever since upgrading to Catalina 15.4 4 days back. Getting a sleep kernel panic. System restarts evertime I wake it from sleep.

Its to the level I am afraid of putting it to sleep any longer.

I am on 16" Macbook pro, and using since 3 months and Issue never came before 15.4 update

You have a ton of third-party extensions installed any one of which could be causing the problem. The panic log suggests that it started in the video drivers. Boot the computer into Safe Mode and see if the panics continue.

Kernel panics are indicative of possible hardware failure, so you should Check your Mac with hardware diagnostics or AHT. Kernel panic logs are found in: /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ folder.

If you have no success figuring what is happening then you may need to examine the software you have running when the panics occur. Be sure it’s all current. If you must to resolve the problem erase the disk and reinstall macOS. Follow this outline to reset the computer to the factory-new state: Factory reset of your Mac - Apple Support.

Boot Into Safe Mode

  1. If your Mac isn’t already shut down, then shut it down and wait at least 30 seconds before rebooting.
  2. Immediately, at or before the chime, press and hold down the SHIFT key.
  3. Release the key after the Apple logo and progress bar appear.
  4. Safe mode startup is much slower than normal startup, so be patient.
  5. When the Login Screen appears enter your admin password. If you use automatic login, then this means you are in safe mode.

Brand new 64gb pro machine got yesterday.

First thing I did was update the OS. Machine has been unstable since. Freezing up with 2 thirds of the screen going black with top half still rendered, freeze and reboot. Failure to come out of sleep with a panic. Stuttering in general around the OS where it hangs and can get fan firing up.

This is on a brand new machine. Tempted just to send it back and get fresh. Already been on to support.

I have this problem on my 2010 MacPro running Catalina 10.15.4 (19E287).  The details follow and it may be the same or a related issue, but the thing to consider is that for some people it may be driven by the USB peripherals plugged in.

For me, I have diagnosed this occurring when I have a USB Xbox 360 controller plugged in, that had been accessed, when the computer went to sleep.  On wake this KP occurs.  To duplicate this, on the Xbox controller the ring around the X button must either be flashing, have a single element lit, or have been accessed by a game when the computer goes to sleep.  I have played the game (Steam - Life is Strange) without the controller plugged in, let the computer sleep, and have had not had a KP on wake.  I have used the computer doing other things without the controller plugged in and have not had a KP.  I have rebooted, plugged the controller in, and with the lights not lit, let the computer sleep and it wakes without a KP.  On the wake, the controller’s lights were flashing and on the next sleep and wake, the KP occurred.  If I play the game with the controller and let the computer sleep, the KP occurs on wake every time.  This occurs with the controller plugged into the computer directly or with it plugged into a hub.

Until Apple fix this problem, a temporary solution that works for me is to change some settings in System Preferences.

Open the Energy Saver settings in System Preferences and -

  1. Check (tick) the box for "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off"
  2. Uncheck the box for "Put hard disks to sleep when possible"
  3. If checked, uncheck the box "Enable Power Nap while plugged into a power adapter"

Note that you need to change the settings in Energy Saver for both Battery and Power Adapter tabs (where relevant).

Although I've never had the Power Nap setting checked (activated), after changing the settings for Items 1 and 2 as described above, I've not had any Kernel Panics. I'm on a Late 2013 MacBook Pro running macOS 10.15.5 Catalina.

Thanks Kappy,

Yeah I tried safe mode and obviously it's some kind of kernel panic so does not occur there.

I wanted to figure which kernel it is. Since I have not made any change to the system in last 3 months with zero kernel panic and immediately after 15.4 there are kernel panics.

I have tried going back with Time Machine as well... on restoring to 15.3 with same setup there are no kernel panics and immediately after updating to 15.4 there are kernel panics on going to deep sleep.

I have read the Kernel log -

loaded kexts:

com.rugarciap.DisableTurboBoost 0.0.1

com.avatron.AVExFramebuffer 1.7

com.bongiovi.DPSReflector 1.0.6

com.iospirit.driver.!AIR!C 4001

at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch 5430

com.cleverandson.driver.XAerial 1.0.0

com.iospirit.driver.rbiokithelper 1.32

com.avatron.AVExVideo 1.7

com.intel.driver.EnergyDriver 2.0

com.paragon-software.filesystems.ntfs 100.5.15

I have 9 extra kernels loaded almost all are well known and none related to Graphics

Little Snitch, Paragon NTFS, Turbo Boost disable, Avatron Air Display (removed now), Bongiovi DSP, Candelair IR manager (removed now so that took out 2 iospirit kext),

unable to remove this kext - com.cleverandson.driver.XAerial 1.0.0

Please let me know on how to remove this kext file. Its not getting deleted

Still getting sleep issues. Any idea on which Kext can cause issues?

No way to tell without trial and error. You have a metric ****-ton of extensions, so it might take a while.

Since you know from Safe Mode that it is one of them, uninstall each one-by-one until you don't get panics. That would be the one.

It happened in the graphics area, but that may just be a red herring. You can try starting with things that affect the graphics subsystem.

Hi,

So I was able to reproduce the kernel panic in safe mode also...

took 4 hours in sleep mode to reproduce for it to go in deep sleep aka hibernate mode

now what to do?

every time its same error

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff8016a91b2c): Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while entering darkwake on way to sleep. Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily. Thread 0x74.

I have the same problem on my 16- inch MacBook. I do not have a ton of third party extensions. Before 15.4 everything works fine.

That's what happens with kernel extensions after an update. The developers who rely on the aren't very good at writing them. They're buggy and tend to fail with OS updates. That is why Apple has deprecated them and probably won't be supporting them in macOS 10.16.

Barney,

Essentially the point is other users are also facing this issue. and since I have been able to reproduce same in safe mode its to do with Apple kernel files. Plus 15.4 just came out 4 days back. so there might be other users facing same issue as well.

Till date there seems to be no solution other then reboot and save all work before every sleep

I'm not experiencing any problems and have been running .4 for several months on two very different Macs. I am currently running the .4 release without issues.

I haven't seen any other long-time posters report of problems, nor do I remember seeing anything noted by anyone else in the rumor mills (but, I don't pay much attention to them anymore).

The point is, if you want help with your specific problem, you have to create your own post to focus on your problems specifically.
