Kernel panic sleep Catalina 15.4

Hi,

Ever since upgrading to Catalina 15.4 4 days back. Getting a sleep kernel panic. System restarts evertime I wake it from sleep.

Its to the level I am afraid of putting it to sleep any longer.

I am on 16" Macbook pro, and using since 3 months and Issue never came before 15.4 update

Check the logs below -

To be sure - this is a know issue with 15.4, it's a SOFTWARE issue and it's in Apple's bug tracker. Don't send your system back, simply disable Power Nap and you are fine. While 15.5 beta 1 doesn't fix it yet, I assume it may be addressed as soon as beta 2 (and then the GM).

As outlined in my previous posts here, to avoid the "wake from sleep" crashes, in System Preferences - Energy Saver I've unchecked "Put hard disks to sleep when possible". Also, I've checked the box for "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off". Since doing this several days ago I've not had any further instances of the "wake from sleep" crashes. The "Enable Power Nap" option has always been unchecked on my system, so that hasn't been an issue for me.

I have this problem on my 2010 MacPro running Catalina 10.15.4 (19E287).  The details follow and it may be the same or a related issue, but the thing to consider is that for some people it may be driven by the USB peripherals plugged in.

For me, I have diagnosed this occurring when I have a USB Xbox 360 controller plugged in, that had been accessed, when the computer went to sleep.  On wake this KP occurs.  To duplicate this, on the Xbox controller the ring around the X button must either be flashing, have a single element lit, or have been accessed by a game when the computer goes to sleep.  I have played the game (Steam - Life is Strange) without the controller plugged in, let the computer sleep, and have had not had a KP on wake.  I have used the computer doing other things without the controller plugged in and have not had a KP.  I have rebooted, plugged the controller in, and with the lights not lit, let the computer sleep and it wakes without a KP.  On the wake, the controller’s lights were flashing and on the next sleep and wake, the KP occurred.  If I play the game with the controller and let the computer sleep, the KP occurs on wake every time.  This occurs with the controller plugged into the computer directly or with it plugged into a hub.

I consistently saw the kernel panic in sleep on a brandnew Macbook Pro 16, i9, 5500M 8GB with a clean 10.15.4. with only apple power supply connected. As I didn't start to work productively on the new machine yet after I experienced the problem I didn't see other effects so far. The kernel panic in sleep could be avoided on my machine by disabling power nap as a work around.

How did you "disable Intel graphics kernel"?

My 16" MacBook Pro i9 32MB 2TB 5500M 8 GB was running absolutely perfectly until 10.15.4. I had the KP on waking from sleep every time it was connected to a pair of LG 5K monitors. When the laptop was standalone, it worked perfectly. Tried the supplemental update, tried moving to the 10.15.5 Beta 1 and nothing fixed the problem. Eventual solution was to restore to 10.15.3 time machine backup from March 20th. So I've had a day of syncing cloud services, but no sleep or wake problems since.

I never used to understand those people who stayed on the old releases..... until now. Hope this gets fixed soon though. Pretty unacceptable that you can't use the monitors that you purchased from Apple with your MacBook.

As reported in my earlier posts here, I've not had a kernel panic/crash since checking (ticking) the System Preferences - Energy Saver preference "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" - and unchecking the preference "Put hard disks to sleep when possible". I should also mention that I have always had "Enable Power Nap" unchecked (turned off) for both Battery and Power Adapter mode - so that wasn't an issue for me, unlike what has been reported elsewhere.

Thus, the key for me was to change the Energy Saver preferences so that my MacBook Pro never goes to sleep. Previously, waking the computer from sleep triggered the crashes. Hopefully this will be a temporary solution pending an update by Apple.

Further to my last post, I can report that I've not had a kernel panic/crash since changing the Energy Saver preferences as outlined in that post. I should also mention that I have always had "Enable Power Nap" unchecked (turned off) for both Battery and Power Adapter mode - so that wasn't an issue for me, unlike what has been reported elsewhere.

However, I'm still not sure how to fix the issue with crashes occurring when unplugging the Superdrive and/or the Samsung Blu-ray/DVD Writer. This seems to be an unrelated problem. I'm not too worried about this, as I don't use these devices on a regular basis. I should also add that if I shut down the computer while either of these are plugged in, the crash will also occur.

No way to tell without trial and error. You have a metric ****-ton of extensions, so it might take a while.

Since you know from Safe Mode that it is one of them, uninstall each one-by-one until you don't get panics. That would be the one.

It happened in the graphics area, but that may just be a red herring. You can try starting with things that affect the graphics subsystem.

Until Apple fix this problem, a temporary solution that works for me is to change some settings in System Preferences.

Open the Energy Saver settings in System Preferences and -

  1. Check (tick) the box for "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off"
  2. Uncheck the box for "Put hard disks to sleep when possible"
  3. If checked, uncheck the box "Enable Power Nap while plugged into a power adapter"

Note that you need to change the settings in Energy Saver for both Battery and Power Adapter tabs (where relevant).

Although I've never had the Power Nap setting checked (activated), after changing the settings for Items 1 and 2 as described above, I've not had any Kernel Panics. I'm on a Late 2013 MacBook Pro running macOS 10.15.5 Catalina.
