Kernel panic sleep Catalina 15.4

Hi,

Ever since upgrading to Catalina 15.4 4 days back. Getting a sleep kernel panic. System restarts evertime I wake it from sleep.

Its to the level I am afraid of putting it to sleep any longer.

I am on 16" Macbook pro, and using since 3 months and Issue never came before 15.4 update

Check the logs below -

To be sure - this is a know issue with 15.4, it's a SOFTWARE issue and it's in Apple's bug tracker. Don't send your system back, simply disable Power Nap and you are fine. While 15.5 beta 1 doesn't fix it yet, I assume it may be addressed as soon as beta 2 (and then the GM).

Thanks Kappy,

Yeah I tried safe mode and obviously it's some kind of kernel panic so does not occur there.

I wanted to figure which kernel it is. Since I have not made any change to the system in last 3 months with zero kernel panic and immediately after 15.4 there are kernel panics.

I have tried going back with Time Machine as well... on restoring to 15.3 with same setup there are no kernel panics and immediately after updating to 15.4 there are kernel panics on going to deep sleep.

I have read the Kernel log -

loaded kexts:

com.rugarciap.DisableTurboBoost 0.0.1

com.avatron.AVExFramebuffer 1.7

com.bongiovi.DPSReflector 1.0.6

com.iospirit.driver.!AIR!C 4001

at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch 5430

com.cleverandson.driver.XAerial 1.0.0

com.iospirit.driver.rbiokithelper 1.32

com.avatron.AVExVideo 1.7

com.intel.driver.EnergyDriver 2.0

com.paragon-software.filesystems.ntfs 100.5.15

I have 9 extra kernels loaded almost all are well known and none related to Graphics

Little Snitch, Paragon NTFS, Turbo Boost disable, Avatron Air Display (removed now), Bongiovi DSP, Candelair IR manager (removed now so that took out 2 iospirit kext),

unable to remove this kext - com.cleverandson.driver.XAerial 1.0.0

Please let me know on how to remove this kext file. Its not getting deleted

Still getting sleep issues. Any idea on which Kext can cause issues?

I have only faced the issue after long duration of sleep (Mainly overnight) almost never with short duration of sleep.

Disabling Power nap is definetely working, Intel graphics is a third party graphics energy kernel. just make a backup and delete it from library/extensions. and flush saved status.

Disabling deep sleep also helps, but your getting same result by disabling power nap. Does not happen when display enters sleep mode. System should go in deep sleep.

I am having the same issue on my two-week old 16" MacBook Pro. The machine is crashing after waking up, creating a crash report just like yours. After reading dozens of articles on this issue, I have come to the conclusion that the machine is crashing when switching from graphics card to the other; thus, the issue is caused by the current firmware, Catalina v. 10.15.4. My old 13 inch MacBook Pro with a single GPU is running the same firmware and it is not having any issues.

I have tried everything to try to solve the issue including erasing hard drive and installing MacOS from scratch, nothing has solved the issue. Apple needs to release a fix ASAP.

I'm getting the crashes every time I unplug my Apple Superdrive or Samsung Blu-ray/DVD Writer from a USB port on my Late 2013 15" MacBook Pro running Mac OS 10.15.4 Catalina. I've never had this problem before that latest update.

Since the 10.15.4 update I've also had crashes/kernel panics when waking the MacBook Pro from sleep (by lifting the lid). Hopefully, to avoid the "wake from sleep" crashes, in System Preferences - Energy Saver I've unchecked "Put hard disks to sleep when possible". Also, I've checked the box for "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off". I will check in the morning to see if this action has stopped the wake from sleep problem (it's just after 11:00 pm here).

Just as a follow up to this one..... After the downgrade to 10.15.3, I had about one trouble free day and then my machine went back to KPs every couple of hours. Following on from that, I did an internet recovery and wiped the partition structure for "Macintosh HD" and "Macintosh HD - Data" completely, created a new partition called Macintosh HD and reinstalled 10.15.4 (which automatically split's the partitions again into HD and HD - Data. I had lots of time on my hands as the highlight of my week now seems to be a trip to the supermarket!

Anyhow, only had two KPs in the last 7 days. You probably need to have some technical knowledge to feel confident doing this so I'm in no way advising it to anyone who doesn't know how to use the disk utility and restore functions. Fortunately all my data is cloud based apart from a Parallels VM.

In terms of running software that could have been causing KPs and would now be on the latest versions, I use OneDrive, Bitdefender, Dashlane and Parallels.

I'm hoping that the next version of Catalina fixes everyone's issues.

Barney,

Essentially the point is other users are also facing this issue. and since I have been able to reproduce same in safe mode its to do with Apple kernel files. Plus 15.4 just came out 4 days back. so there might be other users facing same issue as well.

Till date there seems to be no solution other then reboot and save all work before every sleep

Brand new 64gb pro machine got yesterday.

First thing I did was update the OS. Machine has been unstable since. Freezing up with 2 thirds of the screen going black with top half still rendered, freeze and reboot. Failure to come out of sleep with a panic. Stuttering in general around the OS where it hangs and can get fan firing up.

This is on a brand new machine. Tempted just to send it back and get fresh. Already been on to support.

I have a user who is experiencing this same issue.

Macbook Pro 16", i9, 32 GB RAM, connected to external HDMI display using Apple HDMI/USB/Thunderbolt adapter, macOS 10.15.4

When the computer resumes from sleep, we encounter the kernel panic error.

Sleeping duration could be a short time (~45 min), or overnight.

Examining the system.log for the overnight crash, the last entries before the crash pertain to

adobe_licensing_helper[5592]

com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (com.apple.DumpGPURestart)

I see some suggestions here:

Disable Power Nap (System Preferences)

Disabling the Intel Graphics Kernel (Is there a safe and easy way to do this? Would it cause issues with future macOS updates?)

Does disabling system sleep mode help? Or is the issue when the display enters sleep mode?

Thank you for any advice or guidance.

I have the same problem on my 16- inch MacBook. I do not have a ton of third party extensions. Before 15.4 everything works fine.

That's what happens with kernel extensions after an update. The developers who rely on the aren't very good at writing them. They're buggy and tend to fail with OS updates. That is why Apple has deprecated them and probably won't be supporting them in macOS 10.16.
