Is having an iPhone a requirement to use an Apple Watch?

I am considering buying an Apple Watch for my 11-year old son for his upcoming birthday. He does not have an iPhone. Is that a requirement to use a watch? Please advise. Thank you!

Yes an iphone is mandatory to setup and communicate with the watch,without an iphone a watch won't function.

Any brand new watch requires an iphone 6s or higher.
