both iMessage and FaceTime waiting for activation

After years of using my old iPhone5, it began to exhibit trouble sending and receiving messages.

I have followed all the instructions on the Apple support website including calling support but the problems still persist. The main clue is the warning " waiting for activation " for both messages and FaceTime.

both messages and FaceTime still work on my MacBook Pro Catalina

If anyone has a solution that WORKED for them, could you please post it here

I would have done to an Apple store but they are closed indefinitely
