2016 MacBook Pro Camera Stopped Working

Hi all,

My camera was working fine yesterday and suddenly stopped. I get a black screen, and the green led near the camera turns on. This happens on all apps. After quitting an app the green led lingers and stays on for a few seconds. It doesn't directly turn off like it should.

Here's what I've attempted:

  • Restarting / Shutting Down
  • Resetting PRAM
  • Resetting SMC
  • Creating a new user and testing

  • Terminal: sudo killall VDCAssistant
  • Terminal: sudo killall AppleCameraAssistant --> this gave me an error "No matching processes were found."

I've also formatted the laptop completely and booted MacOS Catalina from a USB, and restored everything from a Time Machine backup and no luck..

I know that it's not a hardware issue because I can still find the Model ID & Unique ID of the camera in System Information.

Am I missing anything?

Hello diegofernandez,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having trouble with the camera on your MacBook Pro. I'd be happy to share information that may help.

You've completed extensive troubleshooting already towards isolating this issue. Next, check to see that your camera is enabled under System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Camera.

For more help with this, you'll want to Contact Apple Support.

Take care.

I'm having the same issue. I had already cleaned and install Catalina again, but, nothing came back.

I did all the steps that you tried, including what Apple Support Communities replied.

Inside System Information on Camera section appear the follow message: No video capture devices were found. I also saw some errors logs inside "Logs Section".

Current I'm using 10.15.4, there is not update to do.

Hello, I have the same issue with my 13' MacBook Pro 2017

Out of the sudden the FaceTime Camera was not working and disappeared from the systemreport -> Hardware -> Camera

I also reset the Pram and SMC

And even did a complete clean install of MacOS Catalina 10.15.4 but no Luck -> "No video capture devices were found"

Is there any Solution on the Horizon ?

Hi there,

Seems we're in the same boat, except that in my case it still shows in the system report.

If you've tried everything that I've attempted in the beginning of the thread then I guess it's up to Apple to fix this with an update or book an appointment to get it checked as soon as this virus is over.

Let us know if anything works for you!

Cheers

Same story since yesterday. Also tried everything; nothing worked. It seems this problem is on since March, and there is no proper analysis of the issue still available. It seems that the world is out of engineers who could get to the bottom of it. Only shaman's rituals being advised all over the internet. Dear Apple, shame on you.

I am having the same issue with my 13' MacBook Pro 2017. I have searched in forums, went over the phone with Apple and tried everything but nothing worked... I even reinstalled MacOS Catalina but no luck... Apple said they need their tech to look into it. This is very embarrassing for such a big company.
