iMac late 2012 27" screen. Opened iMac from sleep and screen shows vertical colored lines. Restarted now different color background and different color lines. Similar different results on subsequent restarts. Computer is work income. What has happened and what do I do?

I had done the nvram reset on restart the first time. Background and line colors changed but nothing else on screen. No way to do screenshot or anything else. Background is dark reddish and vertical lines are red or black. One of the red vertical lines follows mouse tracking from left to right.

Well you're going to need to take it in for diagnosis and repair. I don't know if any Apple Authorized dealers are open where you are. If it's not the GPU which I suspect, you can try using an external monitor.

I have tried on my iPad to attach a photo of screen taken with phone but have selected image in photo library several times on iPad which I am using for this community post and it will not attach.

Are you clicking on the Image Insertion Icon in your reply and then in the resulting window navigating to the image on your iPad?
Yes. It should attach but is not. I'm in safari on iPad gen 4. Maybe that's problem
It's OK screenshot or not the answer is the same, you need to have it diagnosed.
I have appt at simply mac Tuesday. If it's the gpu, how likely is there a gpu replacement still available?
An external monitor would be inexpensive short term solution. What of my iMac info do I need in order to find a monitor that works with it?
If it is the GPU an external monitor won't work either.
I think you have the Thunderbolt ports which would work with any external display with a Mini-Display Port or Thunderbolt.
