MacBook Pro 16 2019 10.15.4 Kernel Panic / Reboot When Plugged In -- Help!

After I I've updated to the latest release of macOS, I've experienced a weird bug every time I leave my laptop closed (still on) for more than a couple hours and plugged in.

It reboots and states the message/log below.

Not sure what they changed but this did NOT happen before the update.

Things I've tried:

  • SMC Reset
  • PRAM Reset
  • Soft Reset
  • Hard Reset

I still experience this issue everyday.

MacBook Pro 16", macOS 10.15

I recently bought a brand-new MBP 16' too and I experienced several crashes each day even though I had update it to the lastest version of MacOS. I am also very disappointed about Apple's software quality.

What helped was the following:

  • Reset System Management Controllers (SMC) according to the instructions given here (sorry, just the German link; please look for the corresponding English version)

https://support.apple.com/de-de/HT201295

  • Additionally I reset the NVRAM or PRAM even though I don't really know if was necessary:

https://support.apple.com/de-de/HT204063

  • Additionally I turned off power nap in the energy control.

I did all steps after the latest update of MacOS.

Since then no more crashes.

Let uns know if this help for you too.

Stay healthy!

Sorry, didn't realize that.

Have you tried resetting your SMC & PRAM since updating? Might give that one last go. After that possibly a clean install of MacOS. If none of that works I don't know what else to suggest other than potential hardware issue if more people aren't complaining that 10.15.5 didn't fix their KP's.

For anyone having the issue - I strongly encourage you to submit a "full" report to the apple feedback assistant. Including Sysdiagnose and System Information report. It does take a few more clicks, but looks like that is the best way to report the problem to Apple with maximum details.

Basically - right after Kernel Panic Reboot:

Go to https://feedbackassistant.apple.com/

And send you feedback. It has clear directions on how to obtain the two report files.

I ordered a MBP 16" in March when I immediately starting seeing the Panics on 10.15.4.

Apple Support decided to exchange my "faulty" device, and I have kept that one on 10.15.3 (as it shipped) until yesterday.

Having made a Time Machine backup, I upgraded directly to 10.15.5. I can tentatively say this MBP 16" doesn't experience any crashes yet, not even on the overnight sleep that used to cause the panics on the first machine.

I will keep you posted in case anything changes.

Here we go again.... My Powerbook Pro 16".... Had 6 weeks with no crashes after disabling power nap AND reenabling it again.

Yesterday I upgraded to 10.15.5 and BUM after first sleep my Macbook had Kernel Panic again. It sucks to be honest.

Will try to disable Power Nap again. But I must admit I'm not to impressed with Apples software. They must have had 10.000 reports. And still not able to fix it.... a little sad.

As I told yesterday 10.15.5 got my macbook to panic again when doing the power nap.

Disabling power nap seems to have "fixed" the problem. Now I will try to enable the power nap again and see if the problem is still solved as I saw it with 10.15.4. Apple. It seems to be a state-problem, that is solved when you flip the power nap off and back on.

Apple... To be quite honest... you should really fix this software problem... you have had months to fix it... Time to write directly to Tim...

TL;DR called Apple Support regarding this issue, followed their instructions and MacBook is now completely bricked. Got transferred to “senior tech advisor” that said my SMC reset method with T2 chip is not actually an “SMC reset, but a hard reset.” Wouldn’t acknowledge that their instructions just bricked my $3000 computer and told me to go in-store for fix or do Recycling Program for a partial refund Apple gift card.

Hey guys sorry for the long post here but I’m fuming mad at what just went down with Apple Support over this issue.. BEWARE long post

I’ve been having the same problem with the MacBook 16in Pro 2019 waking from sleep would shutdown unexpectedly with the fans going full blast.

This is when sht went down.. I called Apple support and a lady told me instructions to hold down some keys for a reset. After, my Macbook Pro just completely bricked.. It won’t even turn on now, and she was like “It won’t turn on? Tell me your zipcode so I can tell you the nearest store for you to bring it in.”  So I politely asked her to transfer me to a senior tech I could speak to for trying other options before bringing it in.

The “senior tech advisor/specialist” told me I had no options than to bring it into a store.

I explained to him I tried the SMC reset with the T2 chip method pressing the power button for 10 seconds, and he told me “That’s not an SMC reset. That’s a hard reset, so that won’t reset anything internally” 😑

I asked him for other options than bringing it to a store (like a full refund or replacement device) but he said no and told me “You could turn it in for a recycling program for a partial refund on your gift card”😑

So BEFORE calling Apple Support, I had a fully functioning laptop that shutdown unexpectedly on wakeup. AFTER calling Apple Support, I have a totally bricked MacBook that won’t power on and have to go to a store in-person during COVID-19, and was told that T2 SMC reset is actually a “hard reset” with other alternatives of turning it in for a Recycling Program with partial refund.

Obviously now that my computer just won’t turn on at all, I have no choice but to go to a store in-person, which I reserved as my last resort with the COVID-19 situation. Will update again after my visit from the store.

The power button for 10 seconds was a method I tried on my own to get my Macbook to turn on and working (and it worked, until it went to sleep or shutdown)

The reset method as instructed by Apple Support was the full SMC reset you mentioned which immediately disabled the computer and now won’t turn on. What’s really ridiculous about the whole thing is offering the Recycling Program with partial refund, and giving no other option like an exchange of device by mailing it in or full refund compared to visiting the store in-person with the COVID-19 situation and with protests going on.

Edit: also, there is definitely a good possibility that my MacBook might be damaged but as you can tell, most people on this thread have the same underlying problem that tells me it’s not only particular to my case, and it might not be a “damage” issue, rather than a software issue.

I appreciate you trying to help me out.

But like I mentioned above, YES I tried all the steps “holding down the power button” for the precursor step AND also the full SMC reset pressing the Control, Option, Shift for 7 seconds then the power button for the actual reset as instructed by the Apple Support.

I’ve never said the 10 second power button press broke my laptop. It never did. If anything, it allowed my laptop to at least get past the login page and prevent it from shutting down unexpectedly again.

I’m not posting this here to necessarily gain any attention from Apple. It’s to help others with the same problem and bring them into the loop with my problem and what my process is.

Like I said above, I AM bringing it in store to have them look at it and will update after my visit.

Yup same problem here with a MBP 16" (on v 15.10.4 and even worse on 15.10.5), spent the better part of 3 days on the phone with Apple support until they finally escalated the issue to the engineers. Could reliably reproduce the error when putting mac to sleep with hot corners when a second monitor is connected (2* LG Ultrafine 5K; no issues when only one is connected). Tried all imaginable resets and changing settings (PN, graphics switching etc.), even made a fresh reinstall, after 2-3 mins with display off (probably the transition to sleep) the MBP will invariably either reboot on its own or reboot when I try to wake it up (I can hear a fan burst) with the cpu panic error when I log back in.

To say that I am annoyed by 6k worth of material not working flawlessly is an understatement but I'm especially annoyed by the fact that Apple knows about this issue for at least 6 months and still asked me to do a reinstall and a bunch of tests (imo that's their job not mine). But the best part is that now I have to wait for a few days until the engineers get back to me and although the lvl 2 technician told me they have information (and potential solutions) to the issue they're not allowed to share it because it's 'inside information'.. Ofc a replacement is out of the question, this company really isn't what it used to be that's for sure..

Oh last thing I bought the MBP 16" cause my late 2017 MBP just gave out one night while I was working on it and was 2 months past warranty, apparently the SSD died and since it's soldered on the logic board they offered to repair it for 1k or recycle it for free, what a bargain! At this point I really wish there was a decent alternative to Apple, would switch in a heartbeat.

Jun 1, 2020 11:46 AM in response to wyc356

You don't get to talk to the engineers :/ You can ask for a lvl 2 technician tho and if you jump through all the hoops they have for you they will escalate the issue to them.. I've just been calling non-stop for 4 days so Ig the trick is to be persistent.

I feel you, gave my mid 2014 MBP to my gf, still works flawlessly and I've put that thing through the wringer. Something happened in 2015, Apple seems to have made a lot of questionable engineering decisions since then (in terms of producing reliable hardware, from an economical perspective it sure makes sense..). Just keep pushing that's a 3k machine, it's unacceptable that they won't help!

OK.... MacbookPro 16 (from march/april): Friday my macs updated from 10.15.4 to 10.15.5 (19F96). That reintroduced the Sleep-Nap-Kernel-Panic (Kernel Panic when sleeping and on power). The disable "Power Nap" trick solved the problem in the weekend.

Then this morning (in EU), my computer did a huge update again. 15 minutes. Did not ask many questions (none). Bum... New version of 10.15.5 was installed: Going from build 10.15.5 (19F96) to 10.15.5 (19F101).

2020-06-02 09:56:35+02 CaspersMBP16 softwareupdated[366]: softwareupdated: Starting with build 10.15.5 (19F101)

2020-06-02 09:56:50+02 CaspersMBP16 softwareupdated[366]: Previous System Version : 10.15.5 (19F96), Current System Version : 10.15.5 (19F101).

Talking about panic.. Apple releases a brand new 10.15.5 three days after the previous one.

Lets hope that 10.15.5 (19F101) solves the problems, because 10.15.5 (19F96) did not!!!
