MacBook Pro 16 2019 10.15.4 Kernel Panic / Reboot When Plugged In -- Help!

After I I've updated to the latest release of macOS, I've experienced a weird bug every time I leave my laptop closed (still on) for more than a couple hours and plugged in.

It reboots and states the message/log below.

Not sure what they changed but this did NOT happen before the update.

Things I've tried:

  • SMC Reset
  • PRAM Reset
  • Soft Reset
  • Hard Reset

I still experience this issue everyday.

MacBook Pro 16", macOS 10.15

Thank you all for the support and suggestions/work arounds.

For my MacBook Pro, turning off the Power Nap feature on ONLY the Power Adapter setting has worked for me so far. I can leave that feature on when using the Battery.

As a side note, the latest supplemental update for 10.15.4 does NOT fix this issue yet. I have tried the BETA and can confirm they are working on fixing this bug because I did not experience a kernel panic when using it.

Now that said, I do NOT recommend the beta version. When we use betas, we run into beta bugs. There are quite a few that would annoy anyone using it which is why I've reverted back to 10.15.4.

So here's to hoping Apple can push 10.15.5 soon without any new bugs. <----- I know that's probably impossible but here's to hoping right?!

Guess that's the point - I'm not sure of how they manage comms - but at least proactively reaching out to to those that have lodged tickets or opened cases or posted on these forums around this issue and explaining the status might reassure those customers who have experienced this issue and are seeking answers. Silence may be expected by many given past form but I still find it a bit disappointing.. Apparently (Lucafromca reports) apple engineers are aware and exploring on the issue and a fix is likely in the works. Thats encouraging news. We can only hope they are motivated sort this embarrassing issue before the WWDC event in June.

MvanTTheThird,

Thanks for providing your friend's system specs. So.... I honestly can't be sure of what is going on. I too have two identical systems (completely maxed out 16"s) and the behavior has been unique on both. One with problems and the other without (until I completely wiped it). Could be corrupted system files during the build process. Might be that the source (master copy) of the MacOS install that certain fabricators are using (specifically on those custom built machines) have those corrupt bits and are thus causing issues for us and not for those with standard builds.

If I had more machines to test with I could run through more scenarios but alas I do not and won't purchase another $7K machine to do what I believe should be Apple engineering's work on this matter.

I am going to stay on this thread and others and continue to gather information. I'm due to follow up on my open cases and will point back to this discussion on those calls. This lack of stability on so many machines with so many varied configurations is way beyond acceptable.

The software you installed? Really? Then why was my brand new 16 inch MacBook pro crashing as I went through the first time initial setup. It went down twice. Once when I tried to transfer files from my HP laptop with the migration assistant and then again simply selecting if I wanted light or dark mode for the desktop.

After that nonsense the only thing I installed before closing the laptop was one thing and one thing only, an update to MacOS Catalina.

So yes, technically, it is the software we installed and it’s called Catalina.

Here we go again.... My Powerbook Pro 16".... Had 6 weeks with no crashes after disabling power nap AND reenabling it again.

Yesterday I upgraded to 10.15.5 and BUM after first sleep my Macbook had Kernel Panic again. It sucks to be honest.

Will try to disable Power Nap again. But I must admit I'm not to impressed with Apples software. They must have had 10.000 reports. And still not able to fix it.... a little sad.

Yup same problem here with a MBP 16" (on v 15.10.4 and even worse on 15.10.5), spent the better part of 3 days on the phone with Apple support until they finally escalated the issue to the engineers. Could reliably reproduce the error when putting mac to sleep with hot corners when a second monitor is connected (2* LG Ultrafine 5K; no issues when only one is connected). Tried all imaginable resets and changing settings (PN, graphics switching etc.), even made a fresh reinstall, after 2-3 mins with display off (probably the transition to sleep) the MBP will invariably either reboot on its own or reboot when I try to wake it up (I can hear a fan burst) with the cpu panic error when I log back in.

To say that I am annoyed by 6k worth of material not working flawlessly is an understatement but I'm especially annoyed by the fact that Apple knows about this issue for at least 6 months and still asked me to do a reinstall and a bunch of tests (imo that's their job not mine). But the best part is that now I have to wait for a few days until the engineers get back to me and although the lvl 2 technician told me they have information (and potential solutions) to the issue they're not allowed to share it because it's 'inside information'.. Ofc a replacement is out of the question, this company really isn't what it used to be that's for sure..

Oh last thing I bought the MBP 16" cause my late 2017 MBP just gave out one night while I was working on it and was 2 months past warranty, apparently the SSD died and since it's soldered on the logic board they offered to repair it for 1k or recycle it for free, what a bargain! At this point I really wish there was a decent alternative to Apple, would switch in a heartbeat.

LOL I have already updated to the 10.15.5 supplemental update (Jun 1, 2020) and still am experiencing this. The supplemental update was for a kernel security vulnerability but the crashes discussed on this thread aren't happening due to the kernel privilege exploit. (I assume you have already read the supplemental update release note.. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211215)

I got my MacBook Pro 16" four days ago. I updated to 10.15.5 on day one, so that is not the issue. So far each night I have had the same crash everyone else here has. I have my MacBook Pro connected to an external display, external speakers, a thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter, and a dongle so I can connect old USB devices. I close the lid at night and each morning I wake to find that it had shut itself down. I have to start it up again, and I see that error report. Yesterday I disabled "Power nap" and "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically..." but that did not solve my problem; it still crashed and shut itself off. Today I did an SMC reset, and will find out if that helped.

I had saved a few hundred bucks purchasing it from with B&H. They said they would replace it but I'd have to send the other one in first. On the phone with Apple, the guy said he hadn't heard of the issue. I thought to myself, "REALLY?!" How could he have not heard of it? And he, too, suggested that the best thing to do would be to get a replacement. But I'm reading here, and elsewhere, that the replacement could have the same issue! So I don't know what the heck to do. I guess I'll just wait a couple more days and see. But yeah, this is so frustrating. These machines are not cheap. They should definitely work perfectly straight out of the box, and for many years thereafter.

Having exactly the same issues with 16 inch i9 MBP when waking from sleep. Highly irritating as I was relying on using this laptop predominantly in clamshell mode. I'm using a U-Green USB-C adapter 6 in 1 with UBB-C passthrough charging also connected to a Dell U2515H display. If the laptop sleeps for more than a few minutes whilst connected to my external monitor then it reliably crashes on waking. Hugely irritating for this to happen on a machine that costs over £3K. These kind of bugs seem to be more common with Mac OS and they seem totally uninterested in fixing it. Attaching an external monitor to me seems a very common use-case for these machines.

This was an issue at least since MacOS 10.15.4 and the problem got even worse in 10.15.6 public beta 2!!! I regularly do not use beta versions but as I was so frustrated with the frequent kernel panics in 10.15.4 and 10.15.5 that I decided to try the latest beta. But don't expect anything to change!

As I cannot work with a device that panics 4-5 times at a normal working day I decided to use my Lenovo Yoga 710 with Windows 10, 1909. With this device I did not have a blue screen for many, many years.

I tried hard many month and I am considered, hired and paid as an IT expert but I gave up with this operating system. Now I am giving up.

I purchased and returned Refurbished MBP 16inch with 2.4GHz, 64GB, 5500M 8G, 1TB HDD on June, because it crashed everyday every time from the day I purchased.

But I re-purchased Refurbished MBP 16inch with 2.4GHz, 32GB, 5500M 8G, 512GB HDD again and I had no problem for 3 weeks now.

I am using it with an external 4k monitor. PowerNap is enabled and xboxOne controller, mouse, and headset usb are connected all the time. I found that sometimes it doesn’t go to sleep well so I try to make it sleep using sleep button on the menu bar twice. It’s 10.15.6.

I wonder if 64RAM size affects to the crashes.
