MacBook Pro 16 2019 10.15.4 Kernel Panic / Reboot When Plugged In -- Help!

After I I've updated to the latest release of macOS, I've experienced a weird bug every time I leave my laptop closed (still on) for more than a couple hours and plugged in.

It reboots and states the message/log below.

Not sure what they changed but this did NOT happen before the update.

Things I've tried:

  • SMC Reset
  • PRAM Reset
  • Soft Reset
  • Hard Reset

I still experience this issue everyday.

MacBook Pro 16", macOS 10.15

I recently bought a brand-new MBP 16' too and I experienced several crashes each day even though I had update it to the lastest version of MacOS. I am also very disappointed about Apple's software quality.

What helped was the following:

  • Reset System Management Controllers (SMC) according to the instructions given here (sorry, just the German link; please look for the corresponding English version)

https://support.apple.com/de-de/HT201295

  • Additionally I reset the NVRAM or PRAM even though I don't really know if was necessary:

https://support.apple.com/de-de/HT204063

  • Additionally I turned off power nap in the energy control.

I did all steps after the latest update of MacOS.

Since then no more crashes.

Let uns know if this help for you too.

Stay healthy!

Same exact problem. It was so bad on my brand new 16" machine that after being past around on a support call, I asked that they send me a new one, same specs (2.4G 8-core i9, 64G 2667 MHz DDR4, AMD Radeon Pro and Intel UHD GFX cards). I received it, returned the original... and it does the exact same thing. I disabled the power nap and will next disable automatic graphics switching if that doesn't work, but they need to fix the software. Over $4k for a dysfunctional computer is not good business.

I was so desperate that I installed the 10.15.5 public beta 3 meanwhile but this does not solve the problem for me.

I do not think that this is a hardware issue. As so many of us are suffering by this bug I do not understand why they are not fixing this with a top priority.

Is any of the developers here who has experience with beta 4 or beta 5 regarding this issue? I would really appreciate feedback.

I took a 3 year hiatus from Mac computers and built some PC gaming rigs. All run well but the one with the AMD GPU gives me a bit of an adventure because AMD is horrific with driver updates. But that was an AMD issue, not Windows proper.

I have a $600 HP pavilion laptop that trucks along. Never a blue screen of death.

So it’s very disappointing to come back to Mac and see how the quality of Mac OS has sort of fallen off. Not only has it felt as if it’s lost a few MPH off its fastball, it’s also become very “bureaucratic“ in how it runs. Changing simple settings caused Mac OS to throw up signs saying I can’t do that. And if I want to, I have to do this or that first. Sometimes multiple steps. Then I could return and change the setting. Has the department of motor vehicles taken over? It was never like this before. The simplicity and rock solid reliability isn’t there like it was when I left.

Anyway, this MacBook I purchased still has a lot of upside potential so I’m optimistic that these sorts of things will get fixed. It’s a such a beautiful machine. Can’t say the same for Catalina.

It's somewhat helpful to know I'm not alone. It's massively frustrating that Apple doesn't seem to care. I too called and the rep basically said, "There's no reports, it's probably a software you installed." I did reset everything, even did a full install from a freshly formatted SSD. Problem didn't change. When I told him about this thread, he didn't care at all. It's truly amazing that one can spend a boatload of money on a new premium device and that Apple doesn't care (and I'm an Apple guy, but this frustrates me!!).

The software you installed? Really? Then why was my brand new 16 inch MacBook pro crashing as I went through the first time initial setup. It went down twice. Once when I tried to transfer files from my HP laptop with the migration assistant and then again simply selecting if I wanted light or dark mode for the desktop.

After that nonsense the only thing I installed before closing the laptop was one thing and one thing only, an update to MacOS Catalina.

So yes, technically, it is the software we installed and it’s called Catalina.

Honestly your case is starting to sound more like you could potentially have some type of hardware problem if none of the recent updates have helped or remedied your problem. A few people have noted that they had this problem and Apple has replaced their logic board and Touch ID sensor, you may want to contact Apple and possibly setup a repair with them and see if that permanently remedies the problem for you.
