MacBook Pro 16 2019 10.15.4 Kernel Panic / Reboot When Plugged In -- Help!

After I I've updated to the latest release of macOS, I've experienced a weird bug every time I leave my laptop closed (still on) for more than a couple hours and plugged in.

It reboots and states the message/log below.

Not sure what they changed but this did NOT happen before the update.

Things I've tried:

  • SMC Reset
  • PRAM Reset
  • Soft Reset
  • Hard Reset

I still experience this issue everyday.

MacBook Pro 16", macOS 10.15

Thank you all for the support and suggestions/work arounds.

For my MacBook Pro, turning off the Power Nap feature on ONLY the Power Adapter setting has worked for me so far. I can leave that feature on when using the Battery.

As a side note, the latest supplemental update for 10.15.4 does NOT fix this issue yet. I have tried the BETA and can confirm they are working on fixing this bug because I did not experience a kernel panic when using it.

Now that said, I do NOT recommend the beta version. When we use betas, we run into beta bugs. There are quite a few that would annoy anyone using it which is why I've reverted back to 10.15.4.

So here's to hoping Apple can push 10.15.5 soon without any new bugs. <----- I know that's probably impossible but here's to hoping right?!

I just wrestled with Apple about mine and was granted a return. My machine is going back. I'll have to find another laptop and was going to avoid the MBP 16 inch. Your post cinches it for me - definitely avoiding the 16" MBP.

The last straw for me was completely resetting my MBP (i.e. wipe hard disk, reinstall OS, reset PRAM, reset SMC) and having more kernel panics then I had before. I'm convinced that there is something in the OS code (starting with 10.15.4) that is not playing nice with the hardware. Hardware diagnostics and disk diagnostics were all fine on the machine that is being returned to Apple.

And, you still have third-party kernel extensions loading.

The two primary causes of kernel panics are hardware faults and third-party kernel extensions. Removing the latter is the easiest to rule out.

If it still panics without any third-party kernel panics, then the high likelihood is some hardware fault.

However, Apple may have release bad GPU kernel extensions with this update, so that also could be a cause. That is almost unheard of, though.

I have just reported the issue. They haven't even added version 10.15.4 as an option for the bug report...

There were several articles on iFun (https://www.ifun.de/macos-catalina-10-15-4-abstuerze-im-ruhezustand-wegen-power-nap-152078/), the largest Apple related news platform in Germany. Dozens of people discuss that error there.

I would still suggest that you all fill out the feedback form. Has anyone tried if 10.15.5 beta1 fixes the issue?

I've had exactly the same experience, close the lid and put on charge at night and when I open the machine up in the morning, the machine has rebooted with a panic in AppleIntelFramebuffer::setPowerState.

By unchecking "Enable Power Nap while plugged into the power adaptor" in System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter as suggested in this thread, I've had three trouble free mornings.

Thanks all and awaiting a fix from Apple.

I bought a brand-new MacBook Pro 16' three weeks ago and it crashes from the first day 5-10 times a day. I am so desperate. Even the latest update of MacOS provided today does not solve the problem. I cannot believe that Apple is pushing products like this to the market. I am simply not able to work with this product. Its the worst an most unstable system I have experienced ever.

By the way, I tried everything from a clean installation of macOS Catalina to all the kinds of reset mentioned before.

Apple help me or I will refund the product very soon and get myself a stable Windows 10 device.

I can't speculate on why or whether they should make statements. Suffice it to say it's unlikely they are not aware of and actively working to fix the problem.

Note: a previous post I submitted was removed as it mentioned software still in development. Take that for what you will. In any case, keep your spirits up. This may well be resolved soon.

Hey guys,

just wanted to let you know:

I have talked to Apple Support (above 1st level) about another issue and took the chance to ask about the kernel panics. They are aware of the issue and the engineers have tagged it as actively being investigated / fixed soon.

There are 4 'official' workarounds that are suggested in their documentation about the issue - many already being discussed here in the thread:

  1. Disable "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off"
  2. Disable Power Nap
  3. Unplug power cord before you send the computer to sleep (that includes closing the lid)
  4. Shut Down before closing the lid

Just for the many people writing that they are worried. It is being addressed and everyone expects it to be solved in 10.15.5.
