MacBook Pro 16 2019 10.15.4 Kernel Panic / Reboot When Plugged In -- Help!

After I I've updated to the latest release of macOS, I've experienced a weird bug every time I leave my laptop closed (still on) for more than a couple hours and plugged in.

It reboots and states the message/log below.

Not sure what they changed but this did NOT happen before the update.

Things I've tried:

  • SMC Reset
  • PRAM Reset
  • Soft Reset
  • Hard Reset

I still experience this issue everyday.

MacBook Pro 16", macOS 10.15

Thank you all for the support and suggestions/work arounds.

For my MacBook Pro, turning off the Power Nap feature on ONLY the Power Adapter setting has worked for me so far. I can leave that feature on when using the Battery.

As a side note, the latest supplemental update for 10.15.4 does NOT fix this issue yet. I have tried the BETA and can confirm they are working on fixing this bug because I did not experience a kernel panic when using it.

Now that said, I do NOT recommend the beta version. When we use betas, we run into beta bugs. There are quite a few that would annoy anyone using it which is why I've reverted back to 10.15.4.

So here's to hoping Apple can push 10.15.5 soon without any new bugs. <----- I know that's probably impossible but here's to hoping right?!

This is beyond shocking that apple has not resolved this issue on what should be their very best laptop....I am astounded that the update is taking so long to come out and we are suffering day in and day out ,sometimes over 10 times in one day .

I will try to disable the power nap and give feedback in a few days time.I hope a class-action is on the cards for us affected buyers.

This is the next staingate it seems!

What a Shame......

I took a 3 year hiatus from Mac computers and built some PC gaming rigs. All run well but the one with the AMD GPU gives me a bit of an adventure because AMD is horrific with driver updates. But that was an AMD issue, not Windows proper.

I have a $600 HP pavilion laptop that trucks along. Never a blue screen of death.

So it’s very disappointing to come back to Mac and see how the quality of Mac OS has sort of fallen off. Not only has it felt as if it’s lost a few MPH off its fastball, it’s also become very “bureaucratic“ in how it runs. Changing simple settings caused Mac OS to throw up signs saying I can’t do that. And if I want to, I have to do this or that first. Sometimes multiple steps. Then I could return and change the setting. Has the department of motor vehicles taken over? It was never like this before. The simplicity and rock solid reliability isn’t there like it was when I left.

Anyway, this MacBook I purchased still has a lot of upside potential so I’m optimistic that these sorts of things will get fixed. It’s a such a beautiful machine. Can’t say the same for Catalina.

I got my new 2020 16" Mac today. I have the same issue. I had nothing installed on the Mac except MS office. I just updated to 10.15.5 a few minutes ago. Hopefully this expensive device doesn't continue to crash with kernel panics. Crazy - went out and got the 32GB RAM / 2 TB SSD i9 model with the upgraded video. Ill know more tomorrow, but I thought I would post too so that Apple will acknowledge Houston there is a problem.

Please try to disable Power Nap (pluged in and batteries) in the power save options.

It works for many of us.

Actually it still works when you enable the Power Nap again afterwards. It seems to be the disable/enable that correct a wrong setting on the NVRAM.

My story: got my MacBook Pro 16” in start april. Upgraded to 10.15.4. Every time it went to sleep it crashed. Solved the problem with the power nap thing. Did not have any problems for 7 weeks. Upgradede to 10.15.5. Problem started again. Did the disable/enable power nap again and the problem went away.

I have reported this “fix” to Apple.

I've experienced the same problem with my 16" MBP on 10.15.5 and even the latest 10.15.5 patch doesn't solve it. Disabling power nap I still experience kernel panics often (weekly), esp in times of high graphics usage like during a video call or streaming video. I have called applecare 8+ times, sent my machine in for evaluation and they sent it back claiming "no problem was found". Apple has been unable to fix it unfortunately and censors my posts on this forum for "non-constructive rants or complaints".

Did everybody just also kind of gave up on their 16" Macbook like i did ?

This thread is quiet and my computer only got worst with the updates . Doesnt matter what i turn off on power settings.

Did you guys have a solid 100% work around for this. I can turn anything off, i dont care i just wanna be able to close my macbook's lid and open it and be able to continue working from where i left .

Rant; As on my first reply to this thread that got deleted a senior advisor from apple because this macbook 16inch was a replacement for my 2019 15inch macbook she did NOT let me return this computer and transfered me to costumer relation department where they denied me return with the the 14 days, and i pretty much have an unreliable computer that i find my self using my 13inch macbook pro i5/8gb/256ssd over this i9/64gb/1tb/5500M . This is unbelievable . I got so much money tied to this computer and for having had my 15inch replaced apple is gonna think i am the problem not their computers, but really, i just dont use this could be good computer. Im using a greased up 13inch i5 macbook over this .

Mine started working flawlessly after a combination of disabling and re-enabling Powernap, clearing the SMC, and updating to 10.15.5. I haven’t had a single issue with my machine in over a month now. Knock on wood and fingers crossed.

I hope you get yours sorted out as well.

Oh and I’m connected 99% of the time to a CalDigit TS3+ Thunderbolt 3 dock with 4 USB-A peripherals and a DisplayPort connected 27” 4K Dell Display.
