MacBook Pro 16 2019 10.15.4 Kernel Panic / Reboot When Plugged In -- Help!

After I I've updated to the latest release of macOS, I've experienced a weird bug every time I leave my laptop closed (still on) for more than a couple hours and plugged in.

It reboots and states the message/log below.

Not sure what they changed but this did NOT happen before the update.

Things I've tried:

  • SMC Reset
  • PRAM Reset
  • Soft Reset
  • Hard Reset

I still experience this issue everyday.

MacBook Pro 16", macOS 10.15

I recently bought a brand-new MBP 16' too and I experienced several crashes each day even though I had update it to the lastest version of MacOS. I am also very disappointed about Apple's software quality.

What helped was the following:

  • Reset System Management Controllers (SMC) according to the instructions given here (sorry, just the German link; please look for the corresponding English version)

https://support.apple.com/de-de/HT201295

  • Additionally I reset the NVRAM or PRAM even though I don't really know if was necessary:

https://support.apple.com/de-de/HT204063

  • Additionally I turned off power nap in the energy control.

I did all steps after the latest update of MacOS.

Since then no more crashes.

Let uns know if this help for you too.

Stay healthy!

I have Google drive installed AND power nap enabled and still no problems.

What did it for me, was the 5 steps i mentioned above.

When you se Google Drive in the crash reports it is properbly because it is the active process that runs when power nap is enabled.

I think it is the disable/enable powernap that fixes the problem. Properbly a bad State that is set correct when you flip the power nap off and then on.

For what it’s worth, I am now on my second 16” and both are experiencing this issue.

my first one kernel panicked when on and working, during things like zwift app rides, premiere video exports, and Cisco webex video calls - even after a complete reinstall of OS without using a time machine backup. I have not extensively tested the second one yet, but it has been crashing.

My crash on wake went from:

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff8006c16487): "AppleIntelFramebuffer::setPowerState(0xffffff834eecd000 : 0xffffff7f8a1c7d88, 1 -> 0) timed out after 45993 ms"@/

to:

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff800a491b2c): Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while entering darkwake on way to sleep. Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily.

I had the same problem with a 16” mb pro i9 with the 5500 8gb graphics. Since 10.15.4 I had constant KPs when waking from sleep mode when connected to two 5k UltraFine monitors (ie the ones I bought from Apple). No noticeable issues when monitors disconnected- although that’s not too often. .Tried the supplemental update which made no difference. Tried the 10.15.5 beta which also made no difference. As I use OneDrive SharePoint cloud storage for all my files I decided to roll my MacBook back to 10.15.3 using time machine. Worked perfectly ever since. I’m convinced it’s a software issue in my case.

I have the exact same issue. Brand new MBP 16 inch 10.15.4. Disabling powernap also a work around. Called apple support they took notes from the crash report suggested reinstall, maybe software or hardware - couldn't say. Wouldn't directly concede it was a problem with latest os version. I'm left with waiting to see if patch coming and using disabling powernap as a work around. Pretty disappointing experience given how much I paid for the machine and applecare cover.

Just read your post after restarting my brand new machine after yet another Kernel panic crash. All I can say is - do not make the mistakes I did and think very carefully before you spend thousands buying a new macbook pro and/or upgrade your OS - at least until Apple comes clean about what the problem is and gives their customers an indication of how and when it will be fixed.

I'm very disappointed that I've spent 4k on a defective product, and I need a "Workaround" to use it. And still no fixes from Apple after so long. I assume some hardware issue is related and they don't want to start a repair program until they are completely sure what's going on. I have other issues also like glitchy screen (looks like graphic card related), cracking speaker noise, etc. If it's only an OS issue it doesn't make sense to me it's taking so long to fix.

I also have this problem in my MacBook Pro 13'' Early 2015 after updating to 10.15.4, meaning that this problem affects computers with or without T2 chip. Sometimes my computer won't wake up at all. Sometimes the log-in screen will appear but my computer will be completely unresponsive. Sometimes I will be able to log-in but I will receive a message that my computer restarted because of an error. The supplemental update for 10.15.4 has not fixed the problem. Resetting SMC or NVRAM has not fixed the problem. Disabling Power Nap has not fixed the problem.

My MacBook crashes only when it's been in sleep for a considerable amount of time, e.g. overnight. I have never experienced a crash during day after my computer being in sleep for a few hours. I suspect that hard disk does not go to sleep during day but it does during night and this is somehow related to the crash. In Energy Saver settings I disabled 'Put hard disks to sleep when possible' for now and I am going to shut down my computer at night from now on.

I really hope that Apple fix this as soon as possible (this bug has been around for a month now). I am in the habit of updating my system as soon as an update becomes available and I had never such a bad experience with an update before (not even with .0 releases). I do not take Time Machine backups before updating (I used to trust Apple's Quality Control) and I cannot downgrade to 10.15.3. I am really disappointed.

I'm also having the same issue. Ordered a refurbished 16" direct from Apple - came installed with 15.3 and I haven't upgraded to 15.4 yet since the error seems to continue. It's the 2.4GHz i9 processor with 32GB RAM and the 630 graphics. I've been keeping a daily log of the crash reports, most typically it's a "GPU panic" error but for two days I also received "hibernate restore error" instead.

The conditions are identical - closing the lid on the computer for more than an hour, coming back and it doesn't awake from sleep. I need to hold down the power to start up from the black and white logo, then get a crash log on the desktop after signing in with password. Really frustrating for a brand-new, professional grade laptop. I bought to replace a 2011 13" MBP that also just developed kernel panics, which was more acceptable in a 9-year old machine.
