MacBook Pro 16 2019 10.15.4 Kernel Panic / Reboot When Plugged In -- Help!

After I I've updated to the latest release of macOS, I've experienced a weird bug every time I leave my laptop closed (still on) for more than a couple hours and plugged in.

It reboots and states the message/log below.

Not sure what they changed but this did NOT happen before the update.

Things I've tried:

  • SMC Reset
  • PRAM Reset
  • Soft Reset
  • Hard Reset

I still experience this issue everyday.

MacBook Pro 16", macOS 10.15

Thank you all for the support and suggestions/work arounds.

For my MacBook Pro, turning off the Power Nap feature on ONLY the Power Adapter setting has worked for me so far. I can leave that feature on when using the Battery.

As a side note, the latest supplemental update for 10.15.4 does NOT fix this issue yet. I have tried the BETA and can confirm they are working on fixing this bug because I did not experience a kernel panic when using it.

Now that said, I do NOT recommend the beta version. When we use betas, we run into beta bugs. There are quite a few that would annoy anyone using it which is why I've reverted back to 10.15.4.

So here's to hoping Apple can push 10.15.5 soon without any new bugs. <----- I know that's probably impossible but here's to hoping right?!

Installed update 15.5 yesturday(May 27th). Closed the lid after finished working at night and left the computer plugged . For the first time in the 45 days i own this 16" macbook(i9 2.4ghz/64GB\8gb 5500M) it came back out of sleep plugged in with out crashing ... BUT right now May 28th 9pm i re started the PC and reseted pram due to it being slow on a 90MB photoshop document ... Right after Re start i closed the lid to go to the grill and turn the meat and put some chicken and bacon also on the grill . Came back 3 minutes later, opened the lid and it didnt comeback from sleep i heard the fans go full spend for half a second and it turned off . So i held the button to turn it on again and this is the error i had .

I tried returning it before the 15 days return policy, I had enough i7 macbook pros super stable systems and i wnated to just return this one and get the exact same with a i7 cpu,,, they said there was no evidence the computer was defective and since this computer was already a replacement for my 2019 15Inch Similar specs that was overheating and CPU throttling they didnt accept the return . Even though when i got emails about this one being ordered it stated i couold return this in 15 days . The senior tech that was taking care of my case told me ALOT of time that she understood i wnated to return it and i had the right to do it and she would do it, but she wanted to try and troubleshoot this computer first before we tried returning it. Long story short right at the 15 day mark they called me and just told me, "Sorry, we can replace this computer again, there is no evidence this computer has a hardware problem and i had an issue not the computer." Since they were already cool enough to replace my 8month old 15inch for this brand new machine i just let it go and decided to wait for this patch since i was reading eveyone saying it wasnt hardware related ... These i9 macbooks are not stable at all. they are warmer then they are supposed to be, and they crash . I also had a photoshop video driver related crash today . i9 cpus are not supposed to be on thin computers like these yet ... Im stuck with this computer... at least it works most of the time and hopefully it doesnt crash or go completly bad on me in the middle of an important editing/job .

I ll stop here before they remove my comment like the last time i tried posting a comment here and they emailed me syaing if i had feedback on their product to go to the feedback section .

Anyway i miss my 2017 i7/16gb/560xRadeon i had before my 2 i9s macbook. Was a solid macbook and was doing the job just a little slower .

@pnm1 Try this, re start it, let it come back and settle for like 45 seconds or so ... Close the lid, wait 3-5 minsand open the lid again. This is how mine crashed even after the 15.5 patch.

For anyone having the issue - I strongly encourage you to submit a "full" report to the apple feedback assistant. Including Sysdiagnose and System Information report. It does take a few more clicks, but looks like that is the best way to report the problem to Apple with maximum details.

Basically - right after Kernel Panic Reboot:

Go to https://feedbackassistant.apple.com/

And send you feedback. It has clear directions on how to obtain the two report files.

I am having the exact same problem on my MacBook Pro 16 which I've owned for 3 months. The problem started on 10.15.4 but has continued on 10.15.5. Every time I let the machine idol and the screen goes to sleep it crashes and restarts. Apple told me initially that it was a software issue probably caused by one of the apps I had installed so I had to do a complete reset of the computer and reinstall MacOS and only reinstall the apps back on slowly to try to identify which one was causing the problem.

At first this seemed to work but after a while the problem returned even when I only had the Microsoft Teams app installed. I thought that it couldn't possibly be that that was casing the problem but nevertheless I decided to do another reset and reinstall of MacOS only this time I left the machine completely standard as it comes from factory. It is now running much better however it has kernel panicked once with a completely clean system so it has to be a fundamental problem with Catalina.

The apple support team told me that they are aware of a problem with Catalina and are working on a fix but I'm finding it hard to accept that I've just spent £3000 on this computer and I'm supposed to accept that it isn't going to work properly for several weeks / months!

The problems I reported previously on this thread with my 2020 13" MBP have all disappeared since I binned the Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Express Dock HD and replaced it with a CalDigit TS3 Plus. I now have 15 ports of connectivity, including optical out.

FWIW, I have Power Nap enabled on power and battery with no issues.

This machine seems fairly robust and I've not experienced a kernel panic for over a week now (this includes warm docking and undocking via the single Thunderbolt 3 cable).

Hope you all get your MBP 16"s sorted out.

Yes Genius Bar is what they call themselves in-store at the back where they help you - you go to ‘the bar’, and the staff are the Apple Geniuses that run it. Apple terminology. If you can get an appointment to take it direct to a local store then they will take it from you and book it in for repair - hopefully you’d get it back within a week if they have the replacement parts in stock. I’m in the UK, so maybe if you’re not then stores may be closed and you’ll have to order a box. They will replace the logic etc boards if kernel panicking, this is their standard fix if wiping it doesn’t work (which it clearly doesn’t from personal experience and no doubt yours / everyone’s!)

I can confirm that I have the same issue. 16" MBP, 2.4GHz 8-Core i9, 64GB RAM. Started after upgrading to 10.15.4. Tried resetting the SMC which did not help. I tried to restore from Time Machine and that gave a few days without crashing, but then it started again today. VERY annoying. I have not had ViritualBox installed, so I am pretty sure that isn't the reason for my crashes.

I will try to turn off Power Nap.. If that fixes it I really hope they come with a more permanent fix soon. Power Nap was one feature I was happy to finally get when I upgraded to the 16" last year..

Been sending in the crash reports to Apple every time, now several times a day.

Disabling power nap doesn't work for me. Kernel panics started after 10.15.4 upgrade. Supplemental upgrade didn't help. I will try removing all peripherals. I think I had 1 day with no kernel panics provided nothing was plugged in. I'll see if that works - unacceptable though. Where is Apple with a fix? Ridiculous to pay this much for a 16" MBP with multiple kernel panics per day.
