MacBook Pro 16 2019 10.15.4 Kernel Panic / Reboot When Plugged In -- Help!

After I I've updated to the latest release of macOS, I've experienced a weird bug every time I leave my laptop closed (still on) for more than a couple hours and plugged in.

It reboots and states the message/log below.

Not sure what they changed but this did NOT happen before the update.

Things I've tried:

  • SMC Reset
  • PRAM Reset
  • Soft Reset
  • Hard Reset

I still experience this issue everyday.

MacBook Pro 16", macOS 10.15

I recently bought a brand-new MBP 16' too and I experienced several crashes each day even though I had update it to the lastest version of MacOS. I am also very disappointed about Apple's software quality.

What helped was the following:

  • Reset System Management Controllers (SMC) according to the instructions given here (sorry, just the German link; please look for the corresponding English version)

https://support.apple.com/de-de/HT201295

  • Additionally I reset the NVRAM or PRAM even though I don't really know if was necessary:

https://support.apple.com/de-de/HT204063

  • Additionally I turned off power nap in the energy control.

I did all steps after the latest update of MacOS.

Since then no more crashes.

Let uns know if this help for you too.

Stay healthy!

ok so I took the 16” MacBook Pro that was having KPs and wiped it.

Erased the entire partition table from Internet Recovery and started from scratch.

Reinstalled MacOS 10.15.4 (which is the only option for this machine from Internet recovery.)

Went into the OS and loaded my iCloud account. I let it finish syncing content from iCloud Drive and boom! After the display went to sleep for some time I tried to wake it only to find it has kernel panicked with the same messages we’ve all been experiencing.

It was plugged in and setup by default to use PowerNap while plugged in.

I then installed the developer beta profile, downloaded and installed Developer Beta 4 of MacOS 10.15.5.

I left the machine alone all night and let it finish syncing data. No kernel panic. And it was plugged in with Power Nap enabled.

Theory: Something is happening to affected machines running 10.15.4 that seems to have been addressed (although perhaps not completely fixed) in 10.15.5 betas 3 and 4.

I have only witnessed one kernel panic on one of two exactly IDENTICAL 16” MacBook Pro’s running these two betas. And that Kernel

Panic occurred on a machine that has been upgraded from 10.15.3 to 10.15.4 and then to Dev Beta 10.15.5.

The other machine (with no kernel panics) arrived from Apple brand new with 10.15.3. I then installed 10.15.5 Betas 3 and 4 and have yet to experience any similar kernel panics to those the other machine (once running 10.15.4) was exhibiting.

So this current set of tests (wiping and reinstalling from scratch, then updating to latest Dev Beta) is to assess whether the Memory Corruption Kernel Panic (which was different from all the others reported and those I had been experiencing since 10.15.4) was due to corruption of certain system files from the repeated crashes or from the upgrade path taken vs a possible hardware fault.

Outside of a hardware fault or potential data corruption I am struggling to explain why two identical machines would behave differently.

but if this indeed is purely hardware related then Apple has a much bigger problem on their hands with the 2019 16” MacBook Pro based on the sheer volume of reports. Still I’m doubtful of this scenario given the reports have been centered primarily around the release of 10.15.4 and one other Catalina version prior to 10.15.3.

As you note this seems a fairly widespread problem - has there been any statement at all from Apple? My top of the line Macbook pro 16 inch is a few weeks old and experienced this issue from the time I first got it and installed the 10.15.4 upgrade. I have unchecked the nap feature and don't seem to get the multiple Kernel panics a day I was experiencing in the first few days. This seems a pretty significant issue so I am surprised by the deafening silence from Apple. No attempt to reassure or proactively inform customers who have spent 1000's of dollars buying products and we are left to figure out the issue ourselves on forums such as this.

I can't speculate on why or whether they should make statements. Suffice it to say it's unlikely they are not aware of and actively working to fix the problem.

Note: a previous post I submitted was removed as it mentioned software still in development. Take that for what you will. In any case, keep your spirits up. This may well be resolved soon.

Guess that's the point - I'm not sure of how they manage comms - but at least proactively reaching out to to those that have lodged tickets or opened cases or posted on these forums around this issue and explaining the status might reassure those customers who have experienced this issue and are seeking answers. Silence may be expected by many given past form but I still find it a bit disappointing.. Apparently (Lucafromca reports) apple engineers are aware and exploring on the issue and a fix is likely in the works. Thats encouraging news. We can only hope they are motivated sort this embarrassing issue before the WWDC event in June.

Thanks, I brought this 16 inch macbook pro and I had it for less than a week and I am seeing this problem. I cant believe these idiots do not think it is worthy of their time to address your concerns. You have spent so much time in trying to trouble shoot this. If this problem occurs for me again, I am sending this back to apple. They can have their macbook, I know I wont make a dent, but at this rate I dont think they will benefit either.

This attitude is visible even when we go to a apple store, apple should know that no matter how good their products are, without customers they are worthless.
