MacBook Pro 16 2019 10.15.4 WiFi Issues / Dropping Connection -- Help!

When I purchased this MacBook Pro, right out of the box I was experiencing dropped WiFi connections. Now I thought this was a simple bug and could be fixed by restarting/resetting SMC or PRAM reset, however, that wasn't the case. I'm still experiencing dropped WiFi connections even after doing those resets AND updating to 10.15.4.

Not sure why this keeps happening. Am I the only one?

Maybe your new MacBook Pro is generating some amazing USB 3 interfrence from its peripherals:

Why do I have difficulty with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth devices when USB 3 devices are attached to my computer?

Some USB 3 devices can generate radio frequency interference that can cause Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices operating in the 2.4GHz band to have issues communicating with your computer. Here are some tips to avoid this issue:

• If your USB device has a cable long enough that you can move the device, place it away from your Mac—and make sure not to place it behind your Mac, or near the hinge of its display. The antennas for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are located there, and USB 3 devices placed there might interfere with your wireless connections.

• If you're using adapters or dongles on a Mac computer with Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, plug them into the front port on the left side of your Mac, or into the ports on the right side (if your computer has them). These ports are the farthest away from the antennas, making interference less likely.

• To avoid interference on the 2.4GHz band using Wi-Fi, try using the 5GHz band instead. You can change this on your wireless base station. Bluetooth always uses 2.4GHz, so this alternative isn't available for Bluetooth.

When your Wi-Fi connects at 1,300 M bits/sec, and you are achieving only 338,500 in a speed test, it is not a Wi-Fi Problem, and connecting via Ethernet will be no different.

You have something running on this computer competing for that bandwidth, and cheating speed test out of nearly a Gigabit/sec.

Are you perhaps running an anti-Virus scanner?

Hi,

It is now 3 days later and still have not had one single connection failure .... I don't even think about it anymore as it just works now. Before that I really had a lot of dropped connections (I had the feeling it got worse over time) while my daughter, sitting next to me, connected to the same router (Apple Time Capsule, using her 5 year old MBP 13", had no problems at all (nor our phones). That got me thinking that it must have something to do with this laptop and I ended up in the other thread on this forum where they brought up that suggestion.

For me it does seem to do the job, really curious whether it does for you as well. Please keep us updated.

Kind regards.

After having had these disconnect issues (where toggling the "unlock with Apple Watch" setting seemed to "solve" this for a certain period of time) right from the start when I bought this laptop (last June) I must say that I did not have any issues anymore lately (on 10.15.7 right now). Fingers crossed.

I will report back here whenever the problem does pop-up again.

yes still dropping connection :( im sure it can't be hardware in the MBP has to be a software issue or incompatibility with mt netgear D7000

In my opinion, your Apple Hardware and Software are working very well in an extremely difficult "network neighborhood". so many other devices are competing for the spectrum around you, it is difficult to keep a fast connection going.

Dear apple folks. From what I have gathered here in this thread, clearly this is an issue. I have been debugging this for sometime. I've tried:

  • Resetting SMC
  • Resetting NVRAM PRAM
  • Reinstalling OS
  • Resetting my wifi network
  • Trying different APs (Aruba networks on 802.11ac, Ubiquiti 802.11ac and Dlink)

Perhaps here is the nail in the coffin:

  • Head2Head test; Macbook pro 13in 2017 vs Macbook pro 16in 2019
  • Both macbooks are running Big Sur 11.0.1
  • Both macbooks are the same distance to the router, not too close not too far (only about 12 feet LOS away)
  • The wifi routers in this case were reset and their channels tuned to have interference minimized for these two laptops in these locations

Yet again the Macbook 16 is incurring attenuated signal with low Tx Rate.

Please advise.

I have this same issue with my 2020 MacBook Pro 13"- It interferes with my work significantly. I can't ever share my screen while in Zoom meetings because my computer freezes up constantly and disconnects from wifi. My son uses my 2015 MacBook pro, is further away from the router with a wall in between and has zero issues with Wifi signal. I use his computer when he isn't using it for school and have no problems with it disconnecting from wifi. I did the safe mode restart, completely reset my computer, still having issues. Apple please fix this!
