MacBook Pro 16 2019 10.15.4 WiFi Issues / Dropping Connection -- Help!

When I purchased this MacBook Pro, right out of the box I was experiencing dropped WiFi connections. Now I thought this was a simple bug and could be fixed by restarting/resetting SMC or PRAM reset, however, that wasn't the case. I'm still experiencing dropped WiFi connections even after doing those resets AND updating to 10.15.4.

Not sure why this keeps happening. Am I the only one?

Maybe your new MacBook Pro is generating some amazing USB 3 interfrence from its peripherals:

Why do I have difficulty with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth devices when USB 3 devices are attached to my computer?

Some USB 3 devices can generate radio frequency interference that can cause Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices operating in the 2.4GHz band to have issues communicating with your computer. Here are some tips to avoid this issue:

• If your USB device has a cable long enough that you can move the device, place it away from your Mac—and make sure not to place it behind your Mac, or near the hinge of its display. The antennas for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are located there, and USB 3 devices placed there might interfere with your wireless connections.

• If you're using adapters or dongles on a Mac computer with Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, plug them into the front port on the left side of your Mac, or into the ports on the right side (if your computer has them). These ports are the farthest away from the antennas, making interference less likely.

• To avoid interference on the 2.4GHz band using Wi-Fi, try using the 5GHz band instead. You can change this on your wireless base station. Bluetooth always uses 2.4GHz, so this alternative isn't available for Bluetooth.

After talking with Apple Support we actually came to a fix!

First and foremost, DO MAKE A BACKUP!

After that, plug your mac to the charging cable, then turn off your MacBook Pro. After shuting down, press: Shift-Option-⌘-R, connect to your wifi or use an ethernet port. It will bring macOS Recovery mode.

Make sure that your disk is mounted correctly by clicking on disk utilities and making sure that Macintosh HD is mounted.

Then, close the disk utility by clicking on the close window button and proceed to "reinstall macOS". DON'T format, no need. just reinstall macOS on the Macintosh HD.

Yes I also found it weird but the Apple Support explained. When you reinstall macOS on an HD that already has macOS, it reinstalls macOS without losing any of your data. So it basically reinstalls all your macOS while keeping all your data and files! :D

It has been a day after doing this and FINALLY, after months, NO MORE WIFI Random Drops!

Hope it works for you guys too!

That's good news! Glad it worked out for you. Yes when you reinstall the OS (no erasing) it's removing your old System Folder that contains the files to run the system and those files may contain some corruption that leads to instability. Reinstalling replaces your System Folder and will not touch your common files and applications. Thanks for your helpful post the forum!

I have had this problem from the time of purchase and have spent at least 20 hours with apple support on the phone and a couple of hours in Apple store. I was also told to replace my modem, reinstall OSX etc... The interesting thing is that I have an old iMac, 2011 built that sits right next to this POS and both are using the same wifi network and works great, but the six months old MacBook Pro has been nothing but disappointment.

I am waiting for parts to arrive, (who knows when) and take it to store for repair!!! While doing telework, I've had countless number of downtime hours on this device and Apple will not replace this lemon, but leaves the option open for me to buy a new one, get this one fixed and then return the new purchase back to store!!! Since Steve Job's departure from this world, his first class company has been turned into a Micky Mouse castle where everything is based on quick revenue and customer satisfaction has slipped way down in their priorities. A $599 price tag on a set of four coaster wheels to make moving your tower easy is what this company has become.

Despite the fact that we own number of iPhones, iPads, Apple watches, Apple TVs, iPods, this bad experience with my latest purchase of MacBook Pro will mark the very last purchase of Apple products.

I am not expecting an Apple support agent to lead me to more links and bumble-jumbles, there is no quick fix to this POS and I feel like I have purchased a defective product regardless of its fate coming back from repair.

Hi Jean-louis,

I wasn't implying that you need a watch for this setting to appear on your Mac.

If it happens to be enabled on your Mac you can imagine that this might affect the functioning of the wifi-radio in your MAC.

Anyhow, I have disabled this setting yesterday and up until now have not experienced any dropped connection anymore.

Not joking.

THANK YOU JEEHOO !

I just can't believe it..... it is indeed now working well !

Teams stop dropping because of wifi drops.

Safari stop bugging because of wifi drops

Apple mail ... the same

I don't want to cry victory too fast but it's been working straight since yesterday ! I can't explain the link between wifi drops and apple watch unlocking but apparently there is one

@Apple : the only "good thing" about being in a fully (expansive) locked environment is that everything is supposed to work smoothly... Thank you for fixing the pb ASAP. A 600 € apple watch should work fine with a 3.8 k€ laptop I guess...

Hi @DPJ

I got a brand new MBP 16' inch and used migration assistant to transfer everything from my previous (2018 13 inch) MBP. As soon as I connect a bluetooth device, the wifi drops out entirely for around 1 - 2 minutes, then it drops out approx every 2 minutes thereafter. I have been unable to participate in 3 business meetings since getting the new MBP, and have been threatened with financial penalties because I have not met criteria for presenting at company meetings.

I've been troubleshooting over the phone with Apple tech support. Today reinstalled macOS. That hasn't helped. The problem is extremely consistent and reproducible. When I connect the same bluetooth headphones to my 13 inch MBP, everything works fine. When connected to the 16 inch, wifi constantly dropping out.

This is extremely serious. The reason I bought this new MBP (for $5.5k) is because the keyboard on the other doesn't work and I couldn't afford the time to buy a backup hard disk, mess around with time machine, ensure everything was deleted properly, and drop it of FOR UP TO 2 WEEKS for repair (!!). I could more easily go without food for 2 weeks than my laptop! (not happening). And now, many thousands of dollars later, I am again without a properly functioning laptop. Incredible.

It is extremely disappointing, and probably more widespread than you think. I had to google some very refined search queries (wifi stops when bluetooth device "macbook pro" after:2020-01-01) in order to find this page. Chances are, others who have the problem simply haven't come across this thread to enable them to voice their frustrations. Maybe they don't even have internet?

Aug 8, 2020 9:31 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Thanks @grant I really appreciate the factual and technical advice.

I had many layers of aluminium foil wrapped around a USB-C cord with my 13 Inch, my understanding is that was a fault with inadequate insulation on the MacBook, not an issue with the cord? In any case, I tried plugging/unplugging all 3 that I'm using (2 x external displays, 1 x power), and they didn't seem to make a difference to the problem I'm experiencing now.

I wasn't aware of the 2.4GHz conflicts between wifi and bluetooth, but that is very interesting. I am in the process of fiddling with wifi modem settings (I haven't done this type of thing before, so I'll do some tinkering and report back). Thanks again
