MacBook Pro 16 2019 10.15.4 WiFi Issues / Dropping Connection -- Help!

When I purchased this MacBook Pro, right out of the box I was experiencing dropped WiFi connections. Now I thought this was a simple bug and could be fixed by restarting/resetting SMC or PRAM reset, however, that wasn't the case. I'm still experiencing dropped WiFi connections even after doing those resets AND updating to 10.15.4.

Not sure why this keeps happening. Am I the only one?

Maybe your new MacBook Pro is generating some amazing USB 3 interfrence from its peripherals:

Why do I have difficulty with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth devices when USB 3 devices are attached to my computer?

Some USB 3 devices can generate radio frequency interference that can cause Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices operating in the 2.4GHz band to have issues communicating with your computer. Here are some tips to avoid this issue:

• If your USB device has a cable long enough that you can move the device, place it away from your Mac—and make sure not to place it behind your Mac, or near the hinge of its display. The antennas for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are located there, and USB 3 devices placed there might interfere with your wireless connections.

• If you're using adapters or dongles on a Mac computer with Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, plug them into the front port on the left side of your Mac, or into the ports on the right side (if your computer has them). These ports are the farthest away from the antennas, making interference less likely.

• To avoid interference on the 2.4GHz band using Wi-Fi, try using the 5GHz band instead. You can change this on your wireless base station. Bluetooth always uses 2.4GHz, so this alternative isn't available for Bluetooth.

My issue with 2.4 is that I have some devices using this, some of which are fairly new so I’m not adding to the cost of an already overpriced MacBook Pro by replacing devices that work perfectly with newer versions.

The MacBook unlock with watch uses Wi-Fi rather than Bluetooth from my understanding so I had to leave Wi-Fi on to test it while using Ethernet - I confirmed in settings I was using Ethernet plus it’s faster so you can see the difference there.

on a typical day, I have my MacBook next to my work computer running Windows 7, an iPhone XS Max, AirPods originals, watch series 3 and a Samsung A40. The MacBook Pro is the only one with issues.

I can reproduce the error with just the MacBook and watch.

Totally agree. I had a $4k MBP with a bad keyboard causing extremely serious issues (*far* beyond merely inconvenience) which I did not have the time to drop in for a free keyboard fix (takes 2 weeks).

So I dropped close to $6k on a new MBP to avoid losing my computer for 2 weeks. And now, $6k later, it's looking likely that will happen again anyway.. unbelievable that Apple should profit so much from their mistakes! (or does that make us totally stupid for persisting with them?)

Not only that, but also had to buy a $600 external hard drive so i have someone to back up my hard disk.

Total cost for a working laptop: $10.1k. And do I have a working laptop? Nope! One with a bad keyboard and one with bad wifi!

So I just want you to know I agree with you, all of this is totally unacceptable financially speaking.

I also agree with you that it only happens with the MBP 16' 2019. (I have 3 other MBPs on the same network all without any issues, as well as a windows box, an imac, an ipad, an iPhone and a few iot devices - all work perfectly).

I just really hope it's a software bug and not hardware. But since you're running Big Sur already I'm not particularly hopeful that that's the case :(

I'm in a bit of a quandary, I purchased for Costco as it was about £300 cheaper and had a 2 year warranty. They've said if it's faulty they will refund it, not replace or repair but refund. I might be able to get another around the same price and it's a bank holiday weekend so there may be offers as well from third parties.

I depends on whether they consider it a fault though but to my mind it's not working as expected.

The alternative is to make an appointment for next week in an Apple Store and possibly get a repair, I doubt that can be carried out in the store so will be a wait or replace with a new/refurbished unit.

My other alternative is just to get a refund and go back to Windows. I primarily bought this as my ageing Windows laptop was unable to run Photoshop and other utilities but I canny Windows hardware much cheaper that will be as powerful.

I have no real need for a MacBook vs Windows but bought it as they generally last longer but I'm being irritated by the lack of apps for many things and I had to upload my video from my phone as the Mac has no way of easily posting to YouTube. Add the missing apps like Netflix (no point having a large drive if you have to use bootcamp Windows to download shows to go) and the other quirks of MacOS and I'm now seriously wondering why I chose a Mac.

This wifi issue has sucked the enjoyment out of the MacBook, I run Speedtest before I do anything now just to check I'm not going to lose my wifi connection. Had this been some knock off import, I could under live with that but £2500 ($3490) for a laptop that can't stay connected really sucks.

I actually having the exact same problem! I compared the mac 16in with my old mac pro 15in made 2014 and the old mac was a lot faster at uploading and download videos on youtube and so, I tried to search for answer but couldn't fined anything.

so we got 2 problems

  1. internet keeps dropping
  2. internet is really slow and keeps interrupting the videos

I'm experiencing the same problem since my MacBook Pro 13" was updated to OS 10.15 in Apple store and it seems to be getting worse by the day, an update was released by Apple about 2 months ago which did help for about a week or so and then back to the same problem. I initially did not want to update to OS 10.15 but had to cause i had problems with my screen flickering while on OS 10.14 and the Genius in the Apple store said it was a common problem and a software bug which updating to 10.15 fixed and now stuck with this intermittent WiFi problems. This has been the worst MacBook Pro i have had since i have been using Apple computers in the last 8 years. It is exhausting and i am at the point of buying a different computer, in one year i have had a lot of problems with this computer than i have ever had with my previous Macbook Pro's.
