I just bought a new fast iMac. I have tried three times to migrate data (about 800 Gb) from my old 2015 iMac to my new 2019 iMac.
The first attempt got 2/3 of the way overnight, via WiFi, and then hung.
Second and third attempts were via Ethernet network and both hung (same state an hour later)

after size calculation completed but right after data transfer began.
Any suggestions? Neither Apple support nor a “senior” Apple advisor was able to help. The senior advisor suggested that this much data transfer probably overheats the older source Mac, causing it to shutdown. (But in attempts 2 and 3 data transfer did not even progress beyond commencement)
Catalina OS v 4 on both.
Thanks.
Any suggestions?
Using the Setup Assistant on the initial boot up is the most trouble free way of moving to a new machine.

Migration Assistant is your second best bet.

Stick with a cable connection over wifi,
If necessary run the Migaration assistant more than once, and if you think the old mac is being overwhelmed than choose to move less at one time(?)
Alternatively if you have other backup sources, try using thee as the source to move your user over.
