Hi,
To record directly into iMovie you need to use the built in FaceTime camera
on your Mac. See this link for instructions:

However, you can use your iPhone camera to record a video directly to your
desktop, save it, and then import the video into iMovie.
To do that, plug in your iPhone to your Mac. On your iPhone open the Camera
app and select Video for video recording.
Then open QuickTimePlayer and do a File/New Movie recording. You will see a
little controller box appear with a red dot in it and a little "v" to
the right of it. Click on the "v" to get a drop down. From the drop
down choose your iPhone as the camera instead of your FaceTime camera.
Make the microphone, sound, and quality settings from the drop down. Then click
on the red dot on your Mac screen to start recording. It will morph into a gray square.
Click on the gray square to stop recording.
The only problem that I have had is with the sound settings. Sometimes I get no
sound and sometimes very low sound. You'll have to fiddle with that. I don't have
sound issues when using the FaceTime camera method.
