Apple TV 5th gen streaming Netflix via HDMI cable to Toshiba TV - film quality pristine but horribly lit, very nasty, unwatchable

Dear Community,

I'm not sure if this is a Netflix, Apple TV or Toshiba TV issue but it's impossible to watch. The image quality is pristine but the lighting and shadows make everything look like an intrusively lit, amateur, claustrophobic stage set.

Unwatchable.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Make sure you are using a high speed cable capable of 4K/HDR (18GBPS data rate). Check your TV's picture settings. Try a different cable and port. Test on another TV if possible.

Thank you for the reply.

I'm now pretty sure it's the TV settings. I haven't yet found the settings you suggested but I've set lots of picture resolution tweaks either to off or to minimum setting which has made it watchable.

It's not as good still as my much older Sony TV, even when using the same Apple TV box and cables.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

Thank you so much for spelling it out for me. I reduced the resolution on the Apple TV box and with a bit of colour and contrast adjustment on the Toshiba the picture is now very good indeed.

Thanks to everyone that responded. I will try a high res HDMI cable as someone else suggested as I suspect the two I have tried with it aren't high res. This so that I can run the Toshiba in try HDMI eventually, but for now I'm very happy with the picture.

Thank you all.
