kernel panic on MBP 16

I have experienced some kernel panics on every standby on my new MBP 16 with i7 processor since last update. Apple remote assistance services re now closed due to convid emergency. I feel a bit left alone. I have restored completely the OS but this did not solve the problem. I post a screenshot of the report.

Seems a power nap issue. Turning off power nap in energy control prevents from the kernel panic shown above for MBP16 in my case. Did several tests with and without power nap. I tested with automatic restart in the morning at 4 am. It always produces a kernel panic with power nap on and never produced a kernel panic with power nap off. I've done this with the latest updates. I have attached a Thunderbolt 3 dock from OWC. It worked until some of the software upgrades. Therefore I do not believe it is a hardware issue.

I can be pretty certain it wasn't something I added - that was Apple's suggestion as well - the problem has persisted consistently despite a completely fresh wipe and install.

Having done all the resets and reinstalls, as well as seeing the direct effects of each subsequent update, as well as the fact that it's happening to multiple users - I think we can safely say this is a bug/series of bugs.

All we can do now is keep reporting the problem and hope that Apple gets around to issuing a fix sooner rather than later.

Guys, just a short update: I received assistance from Apple Care roomette service, we dead several cleaning operations and improving of external monitory and energy managing... the issue is still there.

The operator told me Apple is aware of the issue, they are working on it and are receiving these claims mostly form people who have and external screen. It's 100% a SW issue in their opinioni. Probably we'll have to wait until next OS update I am afraid!

Hi. Thought I'd share here too, hoping Apple will take notice! I've been experiencing the kernal panic from sleep issue from 10.15.4 onward on my 16" MBP bought in February. Was onto apple support with no solution found (tried all the resets, clean reinstallations, eliminating external monitors, 3rd party software etc).

Then found the disable powernap "solution" with 10.15.4, which worked just fine.

Made the mistake of upgrading to 10.15.5 and the problem got worse, kp'ing from sleep every single time.

Today I installed the supplementary update (I keep hoping they'll solve the issue) and now it sleeps and wakes fine, so long as it isn't plugged into my external monitor (Dell U2715H). When plugged into the monitor it KPs during sleep every time, though the time it takes to KP varies (I hear it whoosh).

Have tried resetting the SMC again, switching off various power save options, none making any difference right now. I guess it's just a case of waiting for more updates to solve this.

If safe mode really solved the issue, at least there’s hope that it’s definitely a software issue.

Restarting in Safe Mode is an experiment. In general, "works in Safe Mode, not in regular mode" indicates "it's something YOU added".

This is because safe mode does not load any third-party extensions, and only minimal Apple extensions (does not load graphics acceleration). Screen updates will be wonky and slow, but ultimately correct. No one is expected to run in Safe Mode on a daily basis. Safe mode exists for diagnosing problems.

Same for me with MacBook Pro 16, i7 CPU and Radeon Pro 5300M

Wake up from sleep is ending in black display, not responding system, crash or sometimes it works. I‘m sending at least once a day a crash report to Apple.

Chatting today with Apple support, they suggested to create a test account and watch wake up behavior.

Not sure where this is going to end, but will give it a try.

Hi folks,

I've been getting the same unexpected restarts too. The problem report notes a kernel panic but each time seems to be slightly different.

I've noticed that it tends to happen when I use whatsapp web.

I've had my MBP 16 inch since Dec 2019 and up until 2 weeks ago, I haven't had a problem however I only recently started using whatsapp on my Mac.

I stopped using whatsapp web in chrome/any browser and downloaded the app instead. I thought it was fixed until it did another restart yesterday. I'm wondering if this is at least one of the causes? I've uninstalled it so will see if it continues this week.

Phoned Apple support today and they also ran me through this article https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT200553 .

I just find it odd how it was fine for a solid 4 months then only in the last 2 weeks started the restart unexpectedly.

I haven't reinstalled OS yet - that's the next step! ✌️😊

Hi Folks, I am very much in the same boat. After two rounds of shipping my 2019 16” MBP off to Apple for warranty repair, including a new logic board also, it is still freeze, shutdown, restart. Many time in a day. I did a clean install of 10.15.4 and also updated to the latest supplemental version, no change. Today, I found this thread...look at the post by Mountn41man, as I think he has this problem resolved:

Apple needs to own up to this, as hundreds of us are experiencing the same issue. It is the hardware and we are wasting time and energy waiting for the savior update to arrive.
