kernel panic on MBP 16

I have experienced some kernel panics on every standby on my new MBP 16 with i7 processor since last update. Apple remote assistance services re now closed due to convid emergency. I feel a bit left alone. I have restored completely the OS but this did not solve the problem. I post a screenshot of the report.

Seems a power nap issue. Turning off power nap in energy control prevents from the kernel panic shown above for MBP16 in my case. Did several tests with and without power nap. I tested with automatic restart in the morning at 4 am. It always produces a kernel panic with power nap on and never produced a kernel panic with power nap off. I've done this with the latest updates. I have attached a Thunderbolt 3 dock from OWC. It worked until some of the software upgrades. Therefore I do not believe it is a hardware issue.

I suggest you test the Mac after a complete restore on recovery mode before sending it for repair. I did not experience anymore any mistake report, only once, yesterday, the Mac showed the loading bar on the black screen and took a while to wake up (though less than a proper start from shut off). I am installing all apps as couples and make proper test before installing new ones. Think about this check, sending the Mac for repair on this moment might result in very long repairing time.

Yes, exactly. If there are no kernel panics in safe mode, then it's safe to say that the problem is not hardware. My point being, Apple will eventually fix it and it won't require taking the machine in for repair. But my point is I would not want to keep a brand new machine only to have its logic board replaced inside a month. I don't trust anyone in an Apple store to do anything other than sell me an iPhone case, their training is nowhere what it used to be.

I've had this exact issue and it's been driving me crazy. When I leave the machine idling and the screen goes to sleep it will crash and restart and the problem report says 'Thunderbolt power on failed'. The problem started on 10.15.4 but has continued on 10.15.5.

Reported it to Apple and initially they said it was likely down to some 3rd party app or software I had on the machine. They said it's difficult to identify which one is causing the problem so I had to go through several cycles of wiping the computer, reinstalling MacOS and reinstalling the 3rd party apps slowly one by one to find out which one was causing the problem. Eventually got down to just having the Microsoft Teams app installed and the panics were still happening but I thought it can't possibly be that that's causing the problem. So I did another wipe and reinstall but this time planned to run the MacBook completely clean for several days to see if it reoccurred and although it does run a lot better it has still happened on one occasion earlier today.

Not really sure where to go from here now. I think Apple are aware of this problem and are working on it but how long it will take to resolve no one knows.

I am glad that I’ve found this thread and understand a little better what the problem is and that others are experiencing the same, but I am still very angry that I’ve just spent £3000 on a computer and I’ve just got to accept it’s not going to work properly for several weeks / months. It’s a joke!!

Yes, same here. I tested the issue with and without external screen plugged in and this makes no difference. I am in contact with Apple Care remote service and they are making me use their Capture Data App to make sure to gather more information than the report. Only thing I found our it that the issue pops up with a standby of one hour. If it's shorter (I tried 30 mins) the Mac wakes up regularly.

Today I did several tests, it seem that the Mac crashes if the standby is about one hour... or more. With standby of half an hour it's not crashing. Furthermore, today I had a crash with apps running in the background such as mails, messages, webwhatsapp and photos. I tried to turn it on but only the touchbar was ligghtened. After a couple of minuetes it reboot by himself.

I am being supposed remotely by Apple Care, they are gathering data with their eta recovery app, let's see if this leads to anything.

Guys, are you still experiencing the issue?

I was until last weekend, Tuesday morning Italian time the Apple Care assistant asked me to install a new version of Capture Data (their data collecting tool) and, since then, it's not happening anymore. I initially thought it was due to the app itself or to some process that did not allow the Mac to go into complete sleep, I did several test like using it and putting to sleep without feeding and no app running and I am not experiencing the issue anymore. Are you?

I can confirm that turning off Power Nap did not fix the issues after a few weeks of no issues as it crashed overnight.

I advise against this option. I am sorry, I forgot to update you: few days ago I received the written information by Apple Care assistant. She wrote me finally technician found the reason: it's 100% SW and related to power management. She told me it fill be fixed with the "new update", I tried to ask what she means by this (major/minor) and when this was expected but I got no answer back.

I had same issue on previous MBP16. I returned it and buy new one. I am still on 10.15.3 and won't go anywhere. If we want Apple to do something we have to calling them or sending feedback messages. I know it is frustrating. I also want to make safe update but after 10.15.5 soft they could think that everything is fine. We have to send them our thoughts about that stuff.

Not sure if you've misunderstood? My issue wasn't with Teams, Teams worked fine. It was just that when I had it installed on my machine it seemed to kernel panic more but I now know it probably wasn't Teams, it sounds like it's a problem with Catalina itself.

It could be that there are numerous apps or software which increase the chances / rate of kernel panicing. Nevertheless I won't be installing it back on the machine for the time being. I'm going to run it clean for a good week or more and see how many more times it happens.
