Peculiar Screen Burnout Happening from Bottom of the Screen Up

Hello Everyone,

I have lately been experiencing a burnout (not sure this is the best way to describe it) of my macbook that comes and goes, sometimes worse, sometimes better. To describe the burnout, it's a white line-y, covering anything behind it, when you look close, you can see that it's white lines and a smattering of colors within as well. The problem is becoming much more frequent and is also becoming much more intrusive each time. I will post photos to display the issue exactly, but I am worried this will eventually burnout the whole screen rendering my macbook useless.

This is happening with a macbook pro 13", 2017 retina display with touchbar.

I am wondering if anyone else has experienced something like this or better yet, if someone has experienced it, what steps did you take to fix it?

I've tried to shut it down everyday, even for a few days at a time, and when it comes back on, it sometimes goes away, sometimes stays... This proved to probably not be the issue considering there was no consistent result. I've also tried removed all the connections I have in the ports but that doesn't make any difference either. Additionally, I've used what I had in those ports on another macbook pro (my work device), and this burnout does not happen there, so I would officially rule that out... I don't know what else could be going on but it sure seems it's not going to go away and it will only get worse.

Thanks for you help and insights!

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.12

I've seen a couple of other similar posts on these forums, but I don't recall any final resolution.

Try taking a screenshot of the bottom section of the screen and view the screenshot using Preview. Move the Preview window up so the portion of the screenshot showing the issue is higher up on the screen. If you do not see the issue in the screenshot when moving the Preview window higher, then you have a problem with the built-in display assembly. If you see the issue in the screenshot when moving the Preview window, then you either have a software issue (unlikely) or you have a GPU issue.

You can also connect an external display to test as well. If the issue is with the built-in display assembly, then using an external display will allow you to keep using the laptop.

Also see if it occurs in Safe Mode.

It never hurts to try an SMC reset (follow instructions for an older non-T2 system) and a PRAM reset (hold the PRAM reset for at least a full minute so it activates several times).

Does moving the display lid back and forth have any affect on the issue?

If you don't see the issue in the screenshot, then it most likely means the issue is with the built-in display assembly (or LCD Panel). Luckily it is contained at the bottom edge of the screen for now at least. It is hard to say whether or not it will get worse since I've never seen that particular issue before although I have seen a few other users post similar pictures. Hopefully it will hold up until you are able to get the laptop serviced.
