I inhereted a late-2011 macbook pro and still need to upgrade to High Sierra.

Yeah, the link on that page is just taking me to the "featured" tab on the app store. It doesn't take me to a place to download High Sierra.
Yeah that did it, the original app store link did not work with Firefox, but it did work with Chrome and Safari
