My iMac has broken down and I cannot get it fixed because of Covid-19.
I have many Time Machine backups from my iMac but my question is can I restore a single application from these backups to a MacBook Pro.
If this is possible how do I find the application because there just seems to be mountains of information in different locations under different names.
iMac 21.5", macOS 10.15
Look in theUsers Library folder usually.
I have tried this but unfortunately there are numerous folders which have an Applications folder within them so I’m really confused as to which one actually works.
I've tried 2 so far and both aren’t the correct ones.
do you know if there is a specific folder I should be looking in e.g users/(name)/applications/.....
I accidentally deleted on app on my bf's MacBook pro. I'm trying to restore it - i see the app in the time machine and i've copied it over but it won't open. What library do I need to copy? So confused. I can get to it but can't seem to make it work!
It's best to get applications from the developer's website. Some applications use installers that create multiple files on the computer. Just getting the application from a Time Machine backup won't get those files.
This was a helpful thread. However, when I tried to follow it to restore a version of iMovie that worked last month but no longer will save my projects, it did not work. Here is the error message I am getting: com.apple.Compressor.CompressorKit.ErrorDomain error -1
Should I return and follow you previous instructions again, or is this a different problem?
Yes, in Finder open Applications, highlight the App you wan't to restore, then Enter Time Machine.
They should be dated per when changes were made to the Applications folder, so I'd choose one according to Date when it last worked.

I restored the application but none of the data or the licence key came with it.
Is there any way I can retrieve the whole programme, data and license key so that it will work on my MacBook?
You need to Restore at least 2 Library folders...
Library at root of thew drive & Library in your Users folder.

It's an old app that was installed from a disk in 2015. Not sure where that is now.
Yes! I was able to grab the folder that matched in the \Library\Applications Support folder found in the library. I moved it over to the corresponding folder and now the app is working.
