I need to restore some files from my backup disk to my iMac. Will Migration Assistant let me see what is in the applications folder?

I need to cherry pick the files to download from my backup disc because I suspect there is some malware or a Trojan horse in my backup disc. Do I get the visibility to do that from Migration Assistant or whatever displays my files on my backup?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15

No, the Migration Assistant is really for setting up a new machine. You need to use Time Machine to specifically restore particular files.

  1. Open Finder
  2. Open Time Machine
  3. Select the folder where the files you want to restore are located
  4. Use the up arrow icon to move to a date when the files were correct
  5. Select the files and click Restore

No, you may not see what is being transferred. Migration Assistant only transfers files from one disk which has an operating system on it to another disk with an OS. (They do not have to be the same OS.) During the process, you only have the choice to transfer all of your files or none of them. You can also choose to transfer your preferences and settings, or not. You do not provide any information as to why you think you are infected. Macs can not get a virus or a trojan horse. Malware, yes. That is easily removed by using the free app Malwarebytes. I have seen many, many problems reported on this forum which were blamed on all sorts of things (usually Apple), but which turned out to be due to junk software installed or some incompatibility. If you will provide us with specifics, then maybe someone here can help you resolve your issue.

Here is the history of my issues with my iMac. I have had it for several years, using a HP Officejet Pro 8600 with no problems. Usage is mostly music, photos, and a few uses of Office for Mac, particularly Excel and Word. About 6 weeks ago I went to print something and the printer never responded. Upon checking, the computer said the printer was idle and the computer was waiting to the printer to connect. It was connected but for some reason the communication between the two was lost. I knew it was not a printer problem because I could connect it to my laptop and it worked fine. I could never get an appointment at an apple store so I went to an authorized apple repair dealer, and they could never resolve the issue, but thought they may have deleted a couple of suspicious files. So they restored the system. Fine, so it printed but I lost GarageBand, Office for Mac and all the music, photos, and documents I had.

So I proceeded to back it up from the back up disc I have. Everything was restored, but it would not print again. My assumption was that something that had been backed up on my backup disc was reloaded on the computer, preventing it from recognizing the readiness of my printer. So I took it back to the dealer (still no possibility of getting in to see a "genius") and they restored it again. I am back to square one and want to be able to print from this computer, so I want to be selective on what is downloaded from my backup.

Does this explain this better?

I have one question. Did these problems begin after an OS update or upgrade? You did not say what happened. Was something done or changed that might have affected things? If you updated your computer's operating system, it is common to have printers and scanners stop working. In that case, the problem is because an updated printer driver must be installed. Was that done? Usually, that solves the problem.

There had been only a recent Safari update, not an OS upgrade. We also tried updating the printer driver before I ever took it to the Mac rep. I cannot figure out what this is as nothing new was done prior to this happening and my son-in-law, who is a long time proficient user of Macs helped me before I ever took it into the shop and he finally gave up, after reloading the latest printer driver, etc.
