how do i upgrade to mojave os

I have a Mid 2010 iMac with 16 GB RAM running OS X Yosemite.

I'd like to update it to the most current OS that I can but whenever I try to download updates, it tells me there aren't any.

Any suggestions to bring it closer to what's current?

Your Mac cannot update to Mojave.

The most you can update to is High Sierra.

See here: How to upgrade to macOS High Sierra - Apple Support

You need to download the update through the Mac App Store App, not Software Update.

Mojave would be an Upgrade instead of an Update, but yoyucan't run that OS...
