MacOS Catalina 10.15.4 Crashes

My MacBook started crashing randomly after the last update. The screensaver and power saving is off, and the reboots happen if applications are open, or they are closed and it is just sitting idle.

I have 2 Mac's both 2015's. The only way I found to solve the crash is to install Catalina via a bootable USB. Once I restored from Time Machine the crashes came back. One of them doesn't have Norton, the other does, but both would crash out of the blue. It was pain, but I copied all my files off, installed Catalina from scratch, reinstalled my apps, copied my documents back over and no crashes, not even the Norton installed one crashes. I have a feeling the upgrade has issues, not sure if they are security related, or files not updating, but hopefully they will fix it on the next round.

Uninstall the Symantec software according to the developer's instructions and run for a while to see if there's any improvement.

There's no reason to run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up" or anti-virus apps on a Mac. They are unnecessary. If you have any other than Symantec download and run Etrecheck. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Update to 10.15.5 went smoothly. Left machine on overnight, reset to the "Put Hard Disk To Sleep" option in System Preferences, it went to sleep, woke up normally WITHOUT incident! First time since before 10.15.4 was installed. Also, all peripherals woke-up instantly, without sputtering or delay, which I think somehow contributed to the earlier crashing. In the 10.15.5 Release Notes, they specifically state they did something to fix awake problem with external displays connected.

Going to run several more tests thru Sunday and if no failures, will declare this bug fixed in my mind.

Still waiting on Apple. I received follow-up early last week with questions about how my sleep settings were configured in System Preferences. I answered those, haven’t heard back since. I’ve worked around my crashes by disabling “Put Hard Disk To Sleep” setting. I’ve disabled all sleep settings EXCEPT for the display. Then, I shut laptop down at bedtime and upon doing so, check the “ReOpen Apps & Windows Upon Startup” option.

This workaround has worked well and I’ll continue it until Apple has a fix. I plan to call-in to Apple this week for a status, since they would have had the problem about 2 weeks. Gotta give them some consideration on cycle-time as their services are slowed due to the COVID-19 situation.

I had the same issue with my mac book pro mid 2014. After updating to 10.15.4.

the system would shutdown after few minutes.

I searched online and found some page where they asked me to reset the SMC.

shutdown the macbook

the press shift-control-option and power button all at once.

then release the shift-control- option and press just the power button to start the macbook

doing this kind of solved my problem. I don’t know how or why. May be this would help you.

The Ultimate Solution...

Reinstall the macOS Anew:

I. If it applies: Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support

Then...

II. Reinstall the macOS Anew:

  1. Boot: into Recovery Mode.
  2. Open: Disk Utilities
  3. Delete: the partition
  4. Reinstall: the macOS

Once Installed Anew...

III. Reinstall All the Software:

  1. Use Migration Assistant to move Apps a Files back in.
  2. Ask developers for new software keys - but contact the developers only --- none other --- or you may end up with malware and spyware installed.

Support Specialist says it takes about 3 or 4 business days from Date of submission before Engineering will get back to him. Since diagnostic and crash data from my system was sent to them on April 9th, I expect to hear back from him mid to late next week.

In the meantime, what I’ve done to workaround the issue is to disable “Put Hard Disk To Sleep” in the Energy Savings tab in System Preferences. Also disable use of power nap. I recommend keeping the screen-sleep option on but don’t let the disk turn off. I did that all yesterday and had no auto reboot incidents.

Next, I plan to shut my laptop down over night. In doing that, I selected the “Open Running Windows/Apps Upon Next Login” box and this should put things “almost” back the way I had them before the shutdown.

Both of these steps will mitigate potential data loss from unexpected reboots AND reduce wear-and-tear on mechanical disk drives, if indeed the system does go through an entire reboot sequence after it crashes.

I've turned off the sleep function entirely at this point and the issue seems resolved. No turn offs or crashes, and have been pushing the laptop pretty hard.

I've been traveling with this model and the only odd thing is that I have to push a button in order to wake the screen after closing the lid, but that isn't a big deal.

And yeah, I agree with the above poster, reinstalling software or the OS is unacceptable as a fix. I have a lot of pro level apps installed, and can't just stop in the middle of a giant project and start reinstalling apps just to troubleshoot an update. I dont install "cleaning" or any other untested junk, this is an issue with the update from Apple.

Create a New Administrator:

Try creating a new administrator to perform this install. If it work with the new administrator, then transfer everything over to the new user, and then trash this current user. You should be good to go from there.

Then Try a Manual Download:

Go Here: Download macOS Catalina 10.15.4 Supplemental Update - Apple Support. Connect this directly into your router using Ethernet, if an available option to you. Elsewise, use Wi-Fi.

Important: Download it from Apple and none other. Elsewise, it may be a scam, or malware.

That's way many of the users here who are experiencing the same problem are doing as a routine workflow.
