MacOS Catalina 10.15.4 Crashes

My MacBook started crashing randomly after the last update. The screensaver and power saving is off, and the reboots happen if applications are open, or they are closed and it is just sitting idle.

"Supplemental Update fixes nothing. Still crashing after screen-saver idle. Reboot has happened twice since the supplemental update was applied."

The Ultimate Solution...

Reinstall the macOS Anew:

I. If it applies: Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support

Then...

II. Reinstall the macOS Anew:

  1. Boot: into Recovery Mode.
  2. Open: Disk Utilities
  3. Delete: the partition
  4. Reinstall: the macOS

Once Installed Anew...

III. Reinstall All the Software:

  1. Use Migration Assistant to move Apps a Files back in.
  2. Ask developers for new software keys - but contact the developers only --- none other --- or you may end up with malware and spyware installed.

I’ve worked around my crashes by disabling “Put Hard Disk To Sleep” setting. I’ve disabled all sleep settings EXCEPT for the display. Then, I shut laptop down at bedtime and upon doing so, check the “ReOpen Apps & Windows Upon Startup” option.

That's way many of the users here who are experiencing the same problem are doing as a routine workflow.

Until they fix it, stop letting the hard-drive go to sleep. Use the work-around. Sleep the screen during the day, shut them down at night, set the "Open All Previous Windows" option for the next boot time.

Nothing can be done until there is a fix AND since there is a viable workaround, it kinda lowers the priority on a rush. Add to that, all of their engineering and support resources are strained due to the virus.

So, save yourself some time and grief, use the work-around...

My mac book pro has been a constant nightmare for the last 3 years. I had some hope with the latest upgrade to Catalina. This constant crash thing is ridiculous. I have tried everything, I have spent hours on the phone with apple support. Their solution is usually to upgrade to the newest operating system. Well guess what with each upgrade brings more incompatibility with Apps. I've gone to forums, chats the developers and tried those tricks just to get software to run. All to no avail. The macbook pro works great and fast with basic things like email and internet searching , office 365 and google , but using high end graphic programs like Adobe products and video editing software, I have never been able to keep the system stable long enough to complete a project. I feel I have been dooped. This was my first Apple and I splurged believing I was getting a computer that could handle my video projects. I am so disappointed that it can't. I spent so much money on the macBook pro and got a computer that might be faster, but does nothing more than my low end $600 computer.

Exact same issue with my 16" MacBook Pro. I never turn off my computers, and every morning my MacBook needs to be turned on. This has happened probably 6 times now, never any unexpected reboots before the 10.15.4 update. I could have all my software running or none at all, it doesnt seem to matter.

Odd that it stays turned off, this is the first I've seem a Mac not reboot on it's own. Typically when it has an issue the command is to reboot, not to just shut down..

I have the same issue on an MacBook Pro 16', could be because I have a dock connected? or because I have an external disk connected (ssd)? I will try to leave the MacBook go in screen saver mode without dock and disk connected....

I also try to deselect "put hard disk to sleep when possible"

If I will try an "acceptable" solution I will share it....

I recently got a brand new MacBook Pro, I do not have Norton on it. As soon as I updated the OS to Catalina 10.15.4 I have been also experiencing crashes whenever my laptop is idle. I have never had problems like this with my previous mac, which has a lot of software installed on it. This is my work computer primarily and this is frustrating.

Same here. Have a new MBP 16" Catalina 10.15.4 and it is happening every night. Just came back to work after leaving for an hour and it was also off. I send the report to Mac every single time. I am pretty annoyed that this is clearly a serious issue and not being addressed.

No I am not running Norton or any other "cleaning" software. I have been using this computer for about 3 months now. I am not at all pleased with the suggestions that I just reinstall everything-seriously, do people actually think this is a viable solution?

I will start the workaround suggested with stopping the hard drive to sleep option. I am not at all thrilled about the complete shutdown each night-honestly this is one of the things I like about Macs is the ability to resume work easily every morning without having to completely restart.

I notice that in the report it often has the suspected bundle being some version of com.apple.iokit.IPPCIFamily

I saved the entire report but not posting here. Apple needs to fix this.

I've turned off the sleep function entirely at this point and the issue seems resolved. No turn offs or crashes, and have been pushing the laptop pretty hard.

I've been traveling with this model and the only odd thing is that I have to push a button in order to wake the screen after closing the lid, but that isn't a big deal.

And yeah, I agree with the above poster, reinstalling software or the OS is unacceptable as a fix. I have a lot of pro level apps installed, and can't just stop in the middle of a giant project and start reinstalling apps just to troubleshoot an update. I dont install "cleaning" or any other untested junk, this is an issue with the update from Apple.

I just updated to 10.15.5 thinking that this issue would be fixed. But i am still facing the same issue. When ever some kind of performance is required from the MAC it starts crashing the apps that are running, kindof a domino effect.

I am mostly using the macbook for coding ios apps. Xcode crashes when ever heavy operations is being done, the fan would start spinning in. speed and ultimately everything will crash. If i kill the processes manually when ever i start hearing the fan speed up, then the apps wont crash.

I had the same issue with my mac book pro mid 2014. After updating to 10.15.4.

the system would shutdown after few minutes.

I searched online and found some page where they asked me to reset the SMC.

shutdown the macbook

the press shift-control-option and power button all at once.

then release the shift-control- option and press just the power button to start the macbook

doing this kind of solved my problem. I don’t know how or why. May be this would help you.
