The logic board of MacBookPro 2018 has damaged twice no longer than half a year.

First time: 2019/11/17 after 3 months of warranty expires

Symptom:No power

Apple replaced logic board and cost me over 500 bucks and returned it to at 2019/11/19 with 90-day's warranty.

Second time:2020/03/30 after 40 days of warranty expires

Symptom:No power again

i am in Japan, and i feel helpless.so i contact apple support on twitter.

they told me the tey are unable to make any promises on repair until the device is inspected by our technicians.

so i called apple japan and turns out if i want it be repaired i must pay anther 500 bucks.

because

1.since Apple Stores are currently closed, so i can not go there

2. apple japan can not get any inspection result from Apple Authorized Service Provider

3.if i choose mail-in option it definitely cost money. because the job of people in repair factory is fix things.

does anyone has the same situation?

**Update**

After I restored it by using Apple Configurator2, the MBP is alive.

But I lost all my data.

and for the record, in the Apple Configurator2, there are 2 choices:

  • Actions > Advanced > Revive Device = Reinstall BridgeOS Only
  • Actions > Restore = Reinstall BridgeOS & ERASE OS AND USER DATA!

Revive Device did not work for me.

It seems the problem is the T2 Chip.

When the first time apple replaced the logic board, if I know Apple Configurator2, may be I can save 500 bucks.

anyway thanks for you guys help.

good luck

Without knowing the specifics you can at least provide Apple with the power adapter(s) and charging cable(s) used with the laptop so they can be checked out. Apple doesn't repair third party non-Apple products so you may need to ask an independent Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance in examining any third party items (some may help and some may not).

It is not easy trying to determine if a peripheral is causing problems as you risk damaging another system if a peripheral is actually causing failures to the laptop. Even as a tech this is very difficult since someone has to pay for the damaged item.

The most likely culprits are cheap no-name (or off brand) peripherals (cables, adapters, devices, hubs, etc.). These cheap items don't usually provide safety circuitry since they cut costs in every way they can. I mean cheap in both senses of the word (low cost and poor quality). It is also possible you have an issue with the electricity in your home that could be causing damage over time.

Of course if the underlying failure is different each time even though it still requires the replacement of the Logic Board, then perhaps you are just unlucky.

If you get the laptop serviced at the same place each time you should ask the technician about the repeated failures as they would have more knowledge about the actual reasons the Logic Board needed to be replaced each time.

You should investigate to see if there are any local consumer laws which may help you in this situation.

You can also leave product feedback here:

You can also try contacting Apple directly. Sometimes they will intervene in situations like this where you have the same repair performed multiple times.

I never used third party non-Apple products.

I have another macbookPro(2017) pluging in the same socket, and it works well.

the technician does not tell me the reason because of apple's rule. technician just told me the logic board is broken you need to replace it.

that is why I feel hopeless.

I am a software engineer, i can not say i know everything about mac, but i do know something.

so, this time is not about luck, it is about quality or hardware design.

I also want to know how many macbook pro 2018 touch bar users have the same problems.
