Water damage MacBook Air! File recovery!!

Hi there! I’ve had a nightmare and spilled a gin and tonic over my laptop. Washed it off immediately and turned it upside down and off, but when I left the room my mum turned it on again and it smelt like burning and made some weird sounds (I know it’s the worst thing she could’ve done). Turned it off after this and left it in rice for 48 hours, now I’m left with a laptop where the screen displays the red charging symbol when it’s plugged in, but I charged it for over a day and it won’t actually turn on. I’ve already ordered a new MacBook which is coming in about three weeks so I’m not looking to fix the old one. But I am a final year uni student and there’s a lot of files on it which are not on my most recent backup on an external hard drive, and I really need them to complete my degree. They’re not on my iCloud (I am 99% sure) because it’s been saying that my iCloud storage got full a long time ago and I never updated it. I’m desperate to get my files back, but I’m not desperate to spend a lot of money mending it - having already ordered a new one and spent over a thousand pounds on it. What can I do to retrieve these files when no Apple stores are open for me to take it to? Thanks - a very stressed out student who wants to graduate.

What is the exact model of your laptop? You can get this information by entering your serial number here or here.

If the MBAir is a 2017 or earlier model, then you can remove the SSD and get an external enclosure to see if you can access your data. Otherwise you will need to contact a professional data recovery service such as Drive Savers or Ontrack. Both vendors provide free estimates and are recommended by Apple and other OEMs.

If you have a 2017 or earlier MBAir, then you can get an OWC Envoy Pro Enslosure for the original Apple SSD. Sometimes OWC has Open Box or Used enclosures which can greatly reduce the cost. Apple has several different versions of the proprietary Apple SSD so make sure to get an enclosure for your exact model laptop.

Edit: While it is great that you are backing up the system, you need to increase the frequency of those backups.

If there is any hope at all of recovering information on that Mac, you will need to find a computer repair shop willing to help, more than likely, one that is not authorized by Apple. Apple probably won't be interested since liquid damage is pervasive and tends to be ongoing.
