Activation Lock Issue

If the iPad was previously used and activated by a previous owner, if not correctly prepared for re-use, the Activation Lock can only be removed from the device by the previous owner. This mechanism cannot be bypassed as it is an intentional security and measure designed to dissuade theft of Apple devices.

As the device was obtained from a friend, one would hope that your “friend“ will cooperate in making the device usable.
