Closed captioning using the Apple TV remote app

How do you turn closed captioning on/off using the Apple TV remote app? I read instructions on how to do it with the Apple TV remote (tap on the swipe screen three times) but that doesn't seem to work with the app. Somehow I can turn it on and off by doing something on the swipe screen, but I can't figure out just what I'm doing (IOW, doing it a second time doesn't always work), so I know that there is CC on the movie I'm streaming. Just can't seem to repeatedly do it reliably.
